It's one of those Cross Mountain bikes!! I would say it fits All Mountain, but one thing I think we'll see is that there will be two types of all mountain bikes. There will be those that tend to lean to cross country (5.5, 5 pack, Blur LT) with frames in the 6 lb range. And then there will be those that lean more Freeride (6.6, Nomad, Spec SX trail) with frames in the 7.5 lb - 9.5 lb range.

first off, let me say that I dislike having another catagory of mountain bikes

    getting just silly
but, in light of what "they" (the media) thinks "all mountain" means (i.e., long rides in the woods, not racing, not freeriding (jumping off big stuff) not full on DH. etc..

you know, riding your mountain bike

it workes very well as an "all mountain" bike
I have been riding one for about a month now and love it
it does what a bike should do...

the frame is stiff, it pedals very well (jumps when you hit the pedals) rear end is plush and active when it should be.. it handles great, easy to ride tight technical stuff and is stable at speed bombing down stuff as well

I would call it AM. Doesn't mean you can't ride it wherever you want, but it is designed for the type of riding AM signifies.

I agree with most said there.
That said I would race on it anyday! Expect at a place like Durham forest( local riding place) as a rigid would do good there.
Hell I'd race on a 6.6 just cause I can!
    Riding F/S since oct 94'

I have had a 5.5. I call it an XC bike simply due to head angle. A big and burly XC bike it can be. It climbs like an XC bike, and it rides down like an XC bike. When the suspension is working, you really feel it working. It will hammer, but it is not a bigger, 68 degree head angle bike. That is sort of my defining difference in the category.

What kind of fork your 5.5 have .
    I ride with pike air.
most of the time it is set to 125MM.
when im going downhill I put it on 140mm and I think the head angle is less than 70 degrees .
