how to measure seat post length

how do you determine the length of the seat post??

Am I suppose to measure it to the rails that holds the seat in? or to the top of the actual post?

I have a 06 stumpy fsr and when i measured the post from bottom to the top of the post (without rails) its 10" ~250 mm. on the specialized site it says that they come with either a 350 or 400 mm seatpost. It doesnt appear to be trimmed either.

if i measure to the rails (locking mechanism for the saddle) it measures near ly 12.5" or ~317-320 mm long.

can anyone fill me in. there is a pretty good deal on thomsons right now. FYI diameter is 30.9mm

According to the Thomson FAQ, they measure "from the bottom of the post to centerline of the seat rails." See http://www.lhthomson.com/elite_faq.htm.
