    Formula hubs, good?

I'm building a new wheelset for my AM bike (Remedy). I'm replacing the rear with 142x12. Got the ABP conversion kit already (from 135x5QR to 142x12TA).

Now, I need a rear hub that's 142x12. I was looking to get Hope Pro II Evo hubs, but it is expensive and too noisy. I prefer something quieter.

One of the nearby LBS has a pair of Formula hubs, the rear being 142x12. Are Formula hubs good? I am more concerned about reliability. Thanks.

Formula hubs usually turn up as cheap OE parts on low and mid level bikes, they're fine, I had a set and rode them until they literally disintegrated, which took a while. What killed them in the end was not being able to get spare parts for the freehub. On the whole they're fine, but nowhere near the level of a set of Hopes or DT350s.

For long term use a set of Shimano Deore or SLX would fit better, still quiet and reliable but spares and servicing would be much easier. I'm not sure what your LBS wants for the Formulas but SLX/Deores should be much cheaper than Hopes.

    Re: Formula hubs, good?

I got a set of Hope Hubs for $211 from Wiggle a few weeks ago. Used their 12 off coupon. Not sure how much the Formula hopes you're looking at are.

Thanks guys. How good are the SLX hubs? AFAIK, Shimano still uses cup-and-cone hubs, I prefer sealed bearing hubs.

Glad to hear they're not complete crap. I have a set of brand new DH wheels that have them that I'm trying to sell (OEM off a Kona).

Actually, Bontrager used Formula hubs on their RXL wheels from 2010-2012. If you can tolerate the DT Swiss-like loudness and slow engagement...they are NOT BAD hubs.

Good thing Bonty has returned to DT hubs, as of 2013(RXL/RXXXL).

as long as you properly service the cup and cone bearings once in a while there is no real disadvatange to them.

I got to see a novatec hub in person and was impressed. High engagement and not too loud.

if you pack a tiny bit more grease in the freehub it will quiet it down noticeably, but be careful not to over pack it.
