    Drivetrain Dilema

Ok so I just bought 2014 Santa Cruz Heckler R Am build with the purpose of racing enduro with it. Since I only have the budget to have one bike, it has to be able to more or less do it all. After riding it a couple of times, I am going to put a dropper post on it and am thinking of converting it to 1x10. What is the difference between a 3x and a 2x crankset? Could I just slap on a raceface narrow wide on the triple crankset with new chaining bolt or would that mess up the chainline?

That's pretty much what most people do when they convert a 3x crankset. New chain ring goes on in place of old middle ring with shorter chain ring bolts and you are done. Use a clutch mech to help with chain retention if you don't already have one.
I don't crash, I just have slightly uncontrolled dismounts!

I ran a RF Atlas with a Renthal ring where the middle was for quite some time. It worked well but without a chain guide it would drop even with a type 2 derailuer. I now run a Wolftooth ring and no chainguide with not issues.

Can I just take the big ring off of my triple and put short chainring bolts on? Would this allow me to run it as a makeshift 2x? I have a clutch rear mech.

or replace the 3x crank's big ring with a bashguard. I've been running that for ~10 years.
