    derailleur question

I have a Cannondale 2004 scalpel xc 2000 race, I'm looking to change the rear derailleur because the xtr is damaged. What other brands kind do you recommend. I was looking at SRAM but have no clue what model to get. I know the original is an xtr but that's it, is it a short, long, medium cage. Thanks for your help. I'm looking to order the parts I need, all new cables, tires, grips and such then take it to a shop to install and tune. Again thanks for your help

You're better off to stay with Shimano or you'll have to change your shifter too, not just the derailleur. If you still have three gears up front you'll need a long cage derailleur.

Regardless of the brand, get the model with a clutch. I have the Shadow + and really love it. For SRAM I think it's the Type 2.

Thanks I'll look into the shadow plus. So long cage with a clutch.

The clutched RDs are 10-sp only. With a 2004 bike basically the whole drivetrain will need to be replaced.

The trouble with common sense is it is no longer common

No need to spend up big replacing the whole driveline on a bike not worth that much. Something like this will do the job:

    Shimano Deore M591 9 Speed Rear Mech | Buy Online | ChainReactionCycles.com
