    Component question

I have a '13 Kona Tanuki which came stock with a Deore rear. Can I put an XT on the rear, and if so, will it cut down on some of the chain slap? Also, is the XT compatible with the shifters that came stock? Thanks!

Assuming that your bike came with a 10 speed drive train, you should be able to do it. You can replace with xt and you would need the clutch model that has a built in tensioner to reduce chain slap.

It came with 3x9 drivetrain. Shifters are Acera, as is the front der. If I can't use an XT because of my 3x9 setup, any suggestions on an upgrade for the rear?

You can use a 9 speed xr. Only it won't have the clutch and therefore only offer limited chain slap reduction. It will shift better due to the stronger spring. Best bet for chain slap is a chain guide of some sort

if chain slap is what you're worried about and don't want to get an entire new drivetrain and shifters/derailleurs, you could always get a chain tensioner like a bionicon c guide or similar. The right way to do it would be to replace your derailleur, chain, and cassette, and get a 10speed clutch rear derailleur, but that can be very costly

Get an Xt 9 speed shifter while you're at it.

The Tanuki Deluxe has a rubberized protector on the rear triangle below the chain.
If the Tanuki does not have this fitted, it would be worth fitting it, as it pretty much silences any chain slap.
