Building an AM wheelset - need advice tnx!
Hi all.
I'm looking to build a new wheelset for my 2013 Remedy 7, to replace the current somewhat stock one (Bontrager Duster rims, Bontrager 135x9QR rear hub, SRAM X9 15TA front hub, dunno what spokes - stainless?).
I've already got a pair of ZTR Flow EX 32H rims. I've ordered DT Swiss brass nipples as well. I'm going tubeless and have Gorilla tape ready.
What I still need are the hubs and spokes.
What spokes and hubs would you guys recommend? I'm 200-215 pounds heavy, around 230+ with all gear AFAIK. I'm not very aggressive riding, but I'm trying to be and looking to do higher drops and jumps as my skills progress and confidence builds. I do not race but maybe one day when I'm fit I'd like to try out just one. Basically, I'm looking to the future and want my bike ready for the time when I'm a somewhat more aggressive, harder charging rider.
I was leaning to getting Hope Pro 2 Evo hubs because it is durable, convertable, and easy to maintain. However, the noise it makes is somewhat tiresome already (I am using the same pair of hubs on my XC HT bike). Plus, it is expensive. I'm looking for hubs that's just as good, can be converted to 142x12TA rear, 20TA front, but quieter and cheaper. Any recommends?
Thanks in advance all of you.

I haven't been happy with the Hopes. They have a really weird engagement point and almost a dead spot in the rear hub. The front hub I had also developed play in it, and it wasn't fixable. That was a few years ago, so maybe they're improved.
Personally, I'm a fan of the Kings and Hadleys because of their quick engagement and easy to maintain. Even though they're expensive, I have never had a pair good out on me ever. A lot of folks like the DT240s with a $30 upgrade in the ratchet that improves the engagement in the rear. I've also ridden XT Shimano hubs and not had a problem with them.
For spokes, stick with the DT Swiss standard double butted spokes (14,15 gauge). You don't need straight guage unless you're doing a lot of jumps to flat. Not sure otherwise, I tend to rely on others opinions for spokes. Chad at Redbarn Bikes has been great for helping me build up my next wheelset.

I'm 235 before gear and bomb the dh's. I'd say build them up with Industry 9 hubs and aluminum spokes. I'm running the .100" diameter spokes and their hub before they just redesigned them on the original Flow rims. Your rims should be stouter, but I love the stiffness the spokes give being a bigger rider, on off camber stuff and when out of control trying to save it, the wheels don't wind up like a spring and I have to wait for them to come back, they stay stiff and consistent all the time. The instant hub engagement doesn't hurt either! It helps in the tech parts get through with little pedal inputs. May be costly but way worth. it. Been running them for 3yrs now! I would buy again, and will probably upgrade to the new .110" spokes when I do the flow ex rims after I destroy these ones, in say two more years or when I want the extra width.

I have the Hope hubs on several bikes, and they've been great. Most hubs these days are pretty good, just make sure they will work with your frame and fork. With a good wheel build, you shouldn't have any trouble with those wheels at your weight.

Is anyone familiar with the brand Da Bomb?
Industry9 is still expensive, more so Chris King. I'm looking for something cheaper and quieter than Hope a, but just as dependable, convertible, and easy to maintain. I don't mind the weight of the hubs.

Atomlab anyone ? I'm using it now... the bearings are buttery smooth 60 POE. very silent too.

Take a look at the DT Swiss 350 hubs. Same ratchet system as the 240's but quite a bit cheaper.

Huge hope pro 2 evo fan here. 2 rear hubs on 2 bikes and great us customer service out of Texas location
Also 2nd the Chad at red barn bikes...great guy to call for wheel build if you don't have someone local you like. He has great deals too

White Industries has great hubs, good engagement, customer service and made in the USA. a pair of Whites is about the same price as a King rear and they are lighter.

Personally, given your size and desire to become a more aggressive rider, I think that you are making a sideways if not backwards move going with the Flow EX rims over the Dusters. Principally because the Dusters with TL-Ready strips have a bead lock and the Flows don't. The Dusters TL-Ready strip will provide a much securer interface with the tire than will the Gorilla tape. The bead lock will allow a greater PSI range (i.e., lower) without burping.
The Hope Pro 2 Evo hubs are a good choice since they are one of the easiest to convert between different axle systems. With I9's and others you have to remove the rotors to exchange adaptors.
If you have a bit of cash to spare, I'd recommend Sapim CX-Ray spokes. Light, strong and easy to build with.
i1dry?

What's wrong with your current wheelset? If you are still learning to do drops and tech...you should ride your wheels until you destroy them. Believe me, you will destroy them. In the mean time you can save your money for ER visits

What about Azonic Outlaws, they are a beefy wheelset and are only a few hundred dollars.

I have experience with Hadley's & hopes. I will not buy hopes again. They roll slow compared to Hadley's & I have serviced both. I am a hadley user for life. Just be sure to keep the cups snugged up.
