pretty wide open question. that depends on a lot of things. i dont really think there is anywhere that always has low prices.

also depends on exactly what you want out of a bike, that will change the price a lot.

If i were you i would go ahead and check out your LBS and see if they have any end of the year sales going on. You know they gonna put last years bikes on sale once they start getting in the new ones. I would try and jump on something then.

Unless you dont care if its new then I would look on like craigslist or something like that.

While I agree that there is some nice FS bikes for under 2000, Finding a good 6-7 inch AM almost FR bike for under 2000 is going to be hard to find.

    True. I should have specified 1900-2000 .

I dont think ive found one worth buying for some serious riding that was under 1900. Of course the cheaper bikes are gonna try and say they are good for hard riding but unless you want to start replacing parts quickly i would put some money into a good one.

I have always been told buy right or buy twice. even if that means spending more than you would like. It will be worth it in the long run.

again that all depends on what the make up of the bike is. Just check around the sites like specialized, santa cruz, gary fisher. Go with well known brands and see what is offered.

not gonna be easy to choose a retailer that is below everyone else.

thats what i meant. i doubt you can find a new 6-7'' bike that can pedal well but still take some freeride for very cheap. why do you feel the need for so much travel? a 5-6'' bike would probably more than enough and can be aquired more reasonably.

find a 2010 bikes that they are blowing out. Usually giant, specialized, trek are heavily discounted at years end. Also chainlove regularly sells rockymountain slayers at a killer price if the geo is good for you. I know a few people that have those bikes and they love them.

2008 sc bullit with a lyrik and a dhx coil at my lbs for 2399

2009 sc nomad with domain 302 and monarch 3.3 2199 spend another 60 buck on the fork for a moco IS damper and shell be alright.

If you can settle for something that is not the latest, not the best, but good enough. They are out there. kinda like going to tj maxx, you gotta sift thru the racks.

What do you mean by painful? What hurt? How did your budget just increase by over double?
Man just buy that Kona or find a nice used FS. Buy something though.

I think it's a phenominal bike for the coin. Quality and an awesome value and truly a great AM bike.

Could justify some component swap-out for mission 1's (which I've seen about on clearance for $1k) but the 2's on up can be ridden proudly in stock form.

Why? So that this forum can get back on topic, talking about AM riding?

But wait, besides the moab post, and the post about scoliosis or something, every single thread on the first page of this forum is about bikes and parts. This bike vs that. What shoe do you wear. What color socks do you use for AM. If someone didn't know any better, they might thing AM is all about buying *****. AM = All Materialistic.

Edit: Just to further make my point, there are only 2 posts about actually riding bikes on the 2nd page as well.

I dont know where you live or what size bike you ride, but here's probably the best deal going on a new f/s bike. Check out the Pitch Pro blem for $1500 Complete. It is all the bike you will ever need until you get your GED. or your parents send you to clown college.

There is a 2008 Banshee Rune that's new (well it's an 08, but all unused parts) on PinkBike that's listed at $1800 (CAD $)- which is a steal.

Best post in weeks only because its so true! 99% of new questions asked about products in threads could be answered by "use the search function" because they've been beaten to death before.
