avid hsx 180mm 2 pc rotors warning: all mountain use

I know this is a brake question but its more all mountain specific...

i bought these brakes as an upgrade and on the rotors there is this warning

"this brake is intended for cross country and trail riding only. Not intended for lift access riding, downhill or aggressive all mountain use, head owners manual first"

WTF is that all about, do i need to buy new rotors the bike is made for all mountain... did i just downgrade?

if you go to avid's website they state the hsx rotor is rated for "all" riding types. What brakes are you using with the rotors?

no worries. If you go to avid's website you'll see they list the elixir 3 under the AM brake options. They don't however include it under FR or DH, whereas the HSX rotors are listed as FR and DH rated even though they don't come in 8" size.

That disclosure is just letting you know the elixir 3 weren't designed to deal with the heat of dedicated DH, but that doesn't mean you can't DH with them. You may have brake fade on long steep DH's but you don't have to worry about failure or anything like that.

The 3 uses dot 5.1 fluid which deals with heat very well. It's actually higher quality brake fluid than what's in your car. Even though they are entry level brakes they are quality, and your hsx rotors should help dissipate heat better than the rotors that came with your 3's.
