Breathes well, doesn't inhibit movement, drys quickly, doesn't get caught on the back of your seat, etc.
Professional atheletes wear it for a reason. Personally, I would probably get beaten up wearing it around here, so I stick with casual stuff.

+1 cerebroside
I also use it underneath my casual stuff, mainly because of the coushin for the seat (don´t know the exact name for it).

best chamois are found on high quality road bibs, regulates temperature well, doesn't get caught on the seat/bike, doesn't inhibit breathing, dries out fast, doesn't get caught on branches, etc

It is an appropriate and functional attire for the sport. Wearing anything else - unless it is for some functional purposes, such as wearing armor underneath - is a sign that you worry about your appearance more than about your performance. That is not a masculine trait.

Spandex? aghh GHEY!!! I'll stick with shorts.
Still, you have to admit women look better in them....
The world needs a huge socio-economic change...be it. We all need to ride more....
-
I don't wear it because nobody should have to see that. I do buy baggies and hiking/climbing shorts because I'm cheap and want something I can wear both riding and every day.

I have a pair of padded spandex shorts but i wear them under my cargo shorts. I could not imagine going riding wearing them alone.....

I wear spandex because I like it when my Cock-n-Balls show through my bibs. Gay? Kissing dudes and obsessing about what clothes other dudes wear, that's gay.
Another question: What is it with the Limp Bizkit outfits downhillers wear? Since when is it cool to dress like a 14 year old from 1995?

What fotu said.
Seriously, why do you ****ing care? It wouldn't exist if there was no reason for it.

i feel the same way, it seems that all action sports require you to wear a big flat brimmed hat. i like my hat with a curve and fitting.
i think the always having a hat on especially during pics and interviews has to do with the sponsors. i was watching the end of the brickyard 400 nascar (nascar is boring) before the x games and during the "kissing the bricks" they changes hats like 10x with different brand names on them and i believe the commentator said something about pics for the sponsors
i wear chamois under my TLD ace (xc specific) baggy shorts
