5-10 cyclone shoe ?

Any one use this shoe without a platform around the pedal like a shimano 520-540. Just wondering if the shoe is stiff enough to use with a non platform spd pedal also do they keep your feet warm in the winter, I have the 5-10 impact and they work pretty good in the winter as long as the temps stay above 30 degrees.
