    2013 Trek Fuel Ex5 vs. 2013 Giant Trance X3

Looking at these two bikes and need some help with the comparison.

2013 Trek Fuel EX 5 (sale price $1250)
    msrp $1699

    [Front]
    Sram X5 Derailer
    RockShox Recon Silver 130mm

    [Rear]
    Sram X5 Derailer
    RockShox Monarch RL 130mm

    Hayes Dyno Sport Brakes
    Bontrager Saddle,Seat,Handlebars,Stem,Rims

    VS.

    2013 Giant Trance X3 (sale price $1299)
    msrp 1499

    [Front]
    Shimano Alivio Derailer
    RockShox XC32 120mm

    [Rear]
    Shimano Deore Derailer
    Giant Air-r 125mm

    Shimano M395 Brakes
    Giant Saddle,Seat,Handlebars,Stem,Rims

This will be my first FS bike. Hoping to start hitting the local mountains and trails, possibly upgrade to something nicer down the road if I stick with it.

Im leaning towards the Trek as I like the components better overall plus I just think overall it has the better value. However I hear the Maestro susp. on the Giant is a better system than the ABP on the Trek.

The Trek has a better price, and more travel. Although the Giant has better components, the Giant rear shock is not good at all, so just for that reason I would recommend the Trek, even though it has a worse rear derailleur and worse brakes.

    +1 for the Trek

The brakes are not too bad either.

thanks for the replies. I was currently leaning towards the Trek but at first I really liked the Giant. Just a starter bike to see how it goes.

Great time to buy with the '13 models on sale right now !!

I just did the same, bought the ex 5 about a month ago. Loving it so far, and I don't know if it matters at all to you, but the blue-on-black color scheme of the '13 ex 5 is pretty sick too. I get lots of "Nice bike," comments on the trails.

Go with the Trek!, I really like giant, but that is a killler deal, pretty much all the components on the Trek are better, jump on it dude!

The RS Recon is better then the XC first of all, and I would prefer having X5 front/rear derailleurs then Alvio or Deore, so Trek is offrering better components for a better price, the Deore is the same as a X5 and the brakes are really similar

Happy ex5 rider here. If it fits you well, that's a great price. I've really enjoyed mine so far.

Thanks again for all the replies, really appreciate everyones feedback and it made me feel a lot better about this purchase. I'm picking up the Trek EX 5 tomorrow.

Making a list of things I want/need after that. I think the first will be some new pedals and riding shoes as I plan to ride with flats for now.

Already have a Camel Pak with portable pump and basic tools. I'm also wondering about cutting the bars down but I will save that for a later post. The bars are super wide on this bike !!
