    2011 Giant Trance 4 VS. 2008 Trek Fuel 90

Giant has lower end components but 5" of travel and is brand new. Can be had for between $1200-1400

Trek has XT components but only 4" of travel and is being sold by my LBS and will be warrantied as new even though it has about 10 miles(about) on it (returned). Asking $1200 but can likely be negotiated down to about $900

I am 6'2" and 250# (and losing) and coming off of a '96 Cannondale Super V 900 that had 60mm up front and 100 out back and I routinely bottom out both.

I love tight technical riding in the northeast and while I really like the tight, twisty singletrack, I really like descending and want something that will take some abuse when I go riding lift serviced once in a while as well as be able to climb decently on my group rides.

Thanks in advance for any advice and any suggestions....I need to stay under about $1,500 and really want the piece of mind that frame warranties provide with new bikes so not really looking used too closely.

Go for the Trance! X4 is cheap to buy and it's really easy to ugrade. Stock wheel are so-so but the rest of the bike is quite nice.

I have a Giant Anthem X3 2010 with some upgrade.

I prefer having a 4''. I don't remember being stuck somewhere others could go. A 4'' need a bit more of craziness, but, it's so much lighter!

so... Giant do really good bike, Trek too.... go for 4''

Even though I have owned 3 treks, current riding a remedy, i recommend the trance. The newer frame and tried and true suspension setup make the giant a better choice. You will end up slowly throwing on upgraded parts either way either replacing broken stuff of just for fun, so I would start with a newer, better base in the Trance frame.

    I had the same decision. I'm 6'3" 250 lbs. Chose L Trance X4. I love it.
