Traveling - where to ride near Anchorage

Hi - I will be traveling near Anchorage in June and am interested in single track, somewhat technical trails nearby (0-2 hours). I typically ride for 1-2 hours. Where do you recommend?

There are lots of options available.

Right here in Anchorage, there is good singletrack to ride both on the Hillside (accessed easily from the Hilltop Ski Area or a variety of other nearby trailheads) and at Kincaid Park. You could easily ride for a couple hours at each location and barely ever double up on anything. Pretty easy to mix in some double-track riding for a break here and there with ski trails in the area. Check here for maps of these areas: Singletrack Advocates

A little further out of town would be the trails out near Matanuska Lake, about 40 minutes or so north of Anchorage.

If you don't mind going a little further, you can head south and ride either Johnson's Pass (off of the Seward Highway, maybe an hour or a little more south of Anchorage) or Resurrection Pass (about a 90 minute drive south of Anchorage) trails. These are either point to point or out and back trails (no real loop unless you want to ride the highway). These two may or may not be worth trying to ride depending on the snow levels and how our spring goes. Usually it is more of a late June or mid July type thing before they dry out. They aren't quite as technical, but offer some awesome scenery.

Hatcher Pass is worth a visit as well. The Gold Mint trail has a few rocky, semi technical parts after mile 2, and quickly gets you up into alpine terrain in a gorgeous valley. There are other bits and pieces of singletrack and doubletrack up there, and a newly built downhill only flow trail.
