    Portage lake

    I have heard through the 'grape vine' that portage lake is frozen and is rideable.Has anyone here tried it yet? If it is I am going this sunday.

    Yeah, go!

    Conditions were great yesterday. If there's been any snowfall in the past 24 hours, I don't know how that might have affected the lake surface, but yesterday it was smooth and solid. Lots of ice skaters were taking advantage of it, too.

    It was -15 when we started from the visitor center parking lot, but the ride was a blast.

    Thanks for posting those envy inspiring photos. Portage valley was my first Alaska home back in 1970 at a sort of hippie commune. We used logging tools and chest waders to collect glacier ice from the lake for our freezer-icebox. Makes me want to go for an 800 mile drive. t
