    Moonlit Miles Ride

Come join the Valley Mountain Bikers and Hikers for a moonlit ride on some of our recently constructed trails.

    Moonlit Miles Ride-slide1.jpg

I'll check out the trails Thursday evening to make sure that they are ridable and post updates here and have updates added to the VMBaH Facebook page.

    Hope to see you there.

Did a quick ride through the park to preview the conditions this evening.

The trails have a good texture to them right now with the thin veneer of snow that is still hanging on from Saturday. ( prior to Saturday it was semi-slick ice almost everywhere in the park) I would expect the conditions to hold on for a few days or so unless it rains or something drastic like that.

Rode out onto the riverbed as well and conditions out there are great! Sand is still froze pretty good so it makes for easy riding.

Is it behind Napa? Going along the old train tracks?

Or is it down a little further? Where that little park is iirc?

Canceled due to the complete rained out mess tonight. Did a very, very brief ride through in the rain on my way back from downtown Palmer in route home. Snows gone and icy trails.

For those of you that are having a hard time finding Matanuska River Park IDk google it :-) would be my second best suggestion. :-)

    Re: Papa B
No, you missed it, but not by much. The old RR track is another great riding trail that has lots of potential once you get past the first couple of slide areas, but it looks like you already discovered that yourself.

Hope to see some you out on the trails next time.

I went out there last night as well and agree it was in rough shape.

However, I will wait to cancel officially until 4 this afternoon. If the precip stays snow and the temps stay right at or just below freezing it should be good riding.

Again, I'll post to the various forums at 4PM with updates.

I said canceled because I was thinking the ride was last night and it was raining and no one was around.

    Sorry blockphi.

    No worries, no worries.

I've been a bit off on my dates this week too.

Hopefully we can pull it off tonight. I'm doing my best snow/cold temp dance right now!

Right now the weather station at the airport just across the road reads 34F. I'll run over there in just a bit and check out the conditions. The snow at my house is heavy and wet and would result in some great riding surfaces, but I am a bit concerned about the moisture underneath. I know that if things haven't frozen back down some that the flow trail will be pretty much off limits as the berms were in a bad way last night.

Alrighty - just got back from the park and I am going to say that the ride is on. A few things:

Parking/meet-up: New meeting location - Please meet in the parking lot directly to the north of Backcountry Bike and Ski in Palmer. We will ride to the park from there, as there isn't as much parking space at the gate to the park as I thought.

It is wet, so bring water proof shoes for sure.

There are sections that I will recommend not riding due to slick conditions, but will point those out when we get there.

Riding skinny should be fine, but I would recommend studs if riding skinny just to be safe.

Hope to see a bunch of folks out tonight. I'll be at the meet up spot in a big old suburban. See you there.

Great riding tonight! Thanksnto everyone who made it out. I'll post up the next ride's details soon.

It was a little damp, but I think we all had just the right amount of fun. Alas no pics. Witness protection and all.

Big thanks to co-opski for the assist with the quick link. Life saver there. And mad props for coming all the way up from Gwood to ride with us valley trash.

    Until next time.

Thanks guys! I envy your trails. The ride was not too wet, back in Girdwood it is raining like a moose pissing on a flat rock. So a road trip was better than night skiing.

Details for April's Moonlit Miles ride:
    Moonlit Miles Ride-moonlit-miles-april.jpg

I'll head over there on Sunday and check out the conditions, but there's plenty to ride even if the single track isn't quite ready.

Hope to see you all out there!

It should be good. Most of the established single track is decent now with some puddles, the newer engineered single track is soft and not rideable. I find the double track to stay wet longer than the single track. I'm sure I'll get out this week and will update.

I was out there on Friday on the farm roads and they were pretty decent riding with a few mud puddles. I agree the the single track that's been there a while should be decent by Friday. I didn't hit much, but there's that section over in the college area that runs from the overlook to the college connector/landfill trail and that was bone dry. I think we'll have some decent riding. Hopefully no rain between now and then.

Got my battery on the charger.

Just checked. The moon rises (in anc) at 8:21 this evening.

Should be an awesome ride. Waaaay dryer out today than it was for last months ride.

Had an awesome Moonlit Miles ride last night. The trails were, for the most part, really good riding. There were a few wet spots - many of them that are known problem areas, but overall, I got more dust in my mouth than I did mud.

We rode for two hours and maybe a bit of change. Good times, good times. If you missed it, well, you missed a lot of fun.

May 1 is the next Moonlit Miles ride. Details to follow as it gets closer and as we see what conditions are like.

Would you consider including a ride out the Palmer-Moose Creek RR trail as an alternative?

I've had several people asking about this trail and what its about because many people that I talk to don't seem to realize its a rideable trail and is also one of the first trails in the area that dry out every spring.

Hey, just a reminder - this Friday night is the June Moonlit Miles ride. We're taking off at 8:00 PM from the MatSu Lakes SRA parking lot and will ride for 2 hours. Tentative plan is to hit up the Bear trails (Bear berry, bear bottom, root bear) then head over to Picnic table and then cut up to the Moose trails before heading back to the parking area.

    Hope to see you there.

    Funny you should ask...

    When: Saturday December 19, 7:00PM to 9:00PM
    Where: Meet behind MatSu College
What: Fun fatbike-centric ride over hill and dale Ė though unless we get some more snow before the weekend, skinny tires might be just as much fun.
Why: Why not? The last Moonlit Miles ride of this year is scheduled and it should be tons o fun. The trail conditions are anyone's guess, but come rain, snow, hail, or, who knows, dust storm, we'll ride to beat the year end, too dark and cold, not enough snow blues. The ride is suitable for riders of most abilities. There are some hills and some challenging technical sections depending on route and trail conditions and the makeup of the group will determine where and what we ride. No one gets dropped... Unless you are Robbie and show up with new gear for group ride again...Otherwise, no one gets dropped. Kids are welcome.

    Dogs are welcome

I can't say adult beverages are welcome, but if that's in your bag, what can I say? Lights are a must

    Weather appropriate clothing

    Helmets

You know the rest. C'mon out and explore the trails the Valley has on offer. You might just find your new favorite. Bonus points if you come dressed up as Santa or Krampus. Even more bonus points if you come dressed as Santa riding a Krampus. Thatís awkward.

Nice. Every time I ride there I think to myself: "'yall need to ride these berms higher!"

So, thought I'd start advertising here again to see if we can get even more people out and riding with us. Should be a stellar night if the clouds are sparse - gearing up to the biggest full moon in a century.

    Ride details here

Got a good group RSVPd already. Good times, good times.
