    Guardian 1x9: a few questions?

I am trying to do this on my own: If you have done this already, I am going to get a Race Face 30T WnW ring.

Do i need anything special to be able to put it on the crank, ie. shims or new bolts?
How many links did you take out of chain?
Third, am i missing any other steps in order to do this other than removing shifter and front derailleur?

thanks for your help ahead of time.

You may need single chain ring bolts that are thinner than the ones designed to hold two rings, but that was my experience with a different crank. Your LBS should have them if you find they're too long. You'll also have to pull the crank to get the lower the rings off. Plenty of guides here for that. I took about 6 links out of the chain for my 32T, good luck.
