    X5 derailleur Broke - Advise

    Hello All,

I have a new 2012 Cobia bought it a month ago from Trek. Had a few issues with components, the worse is the X5 rear derailleur broke in half. I have less than 25 miles all city streets. I have heard this is common with the X5 any info. Trek is upgrading me to an X9 with clutch and X9 shifters, is this a good upgrade. When this broke it scratch the h*ll out of my frame. The next question is what to do about that? Trek said they will do what they can, maybe return for a different bike?

I've never heard of X5 components just breaking, but that aside, a scratch is a scratch. They're upgrading you to X9 stuff? Yeah, it's a good upgrade.

I would venture to guess that the upper limit of the derailleur was set incorrectly, and you shifted it into the spokes. A derailleur doesn't break like that JRA.

But yeah, the X9 Type 2 derailleur is nice. I run it on my AM bike, and I'm picky about my components.

EDIT: Have the shop look at the spokes of your rear wheel also, and have them replace any that are bent or damaged.

I've never seen a B-knuckle snap like that before! Yeah, X9 is where SRAM quality, begins. If you want a fully "serviceable" RD....go X0 and higher.

clearly you missed the pictures that show his dork disc

did you possibly run a bad chainline with the big ring, big cog combo?

I've heard of this issue from the interwebz...

EDIT: To add to the discussion, my brother had an X-4 that failed spontaneously while the bike was sitting in the garage. The spring that holds the tension on the chain located inside the knuckle failed. I wonder if that is what happened to yours and the derailleur just wrapped itself around and snapped.

I have been running X-9 and X-0 for a few years and have had no issues.

WOW... I've run X.whatever since 2007/2008 and I have never had an issue like that. I've had a derailleur hanger snap on one of my bikes that had an X.7. Never the derailleur though.

I had pretty much the same thing happen.... X5 RD just exploded on the trail. Only about 50 miles on the bike at that point. It was warrantied but SRAM and the LBS gave me credit towards an X9. Which has worked really well. On my FS bike I have SRAM XX. I would get at least an X9.
