Just got three DH casing DHF 29x2.5 tires from Univ Cycles today. Gee, I have only been waiting for these for about a decade...
Below is a cut and paste from my PM to a big hit big wheel guy a while back:
I have spoken to a couple of Maxxis folks and they both assure me that part #TB96800100 is a dual ply, dual compound 1255g Minion DHF 29 x 2.5 tire. If you go to Universal Cycles and look at the 29er DHF listed at $67 you will notice that it is listed as part #TB96800100 even though they are claiming that it is a lightweight single ply tire. You can see, at least on the UC site, that the EXO DHF 29er tires that MC is selling, and UC is selling for $57 are part #TB96800000 and that is correct, I have two of them from Maxxis direct.
I have informed UC of the problem with the listing of the part #TB96800100 tire and they have not fixed it yet. So I'm suggesting that you get the part #TB96800100 Maxxis tire on your watch list at UC like I have.
So I can now confirm that the following is true about the different 29x 2.5 DHF Minions because I have them:
TB96800000 is a 2 compound EXO tire that weighs about 1000g
TB96800100 is a 2 compound DH casing 2 ply tire that weighs about 1255g
Now for the two triple compound tires that I have not had my hands on, but I have been given this same info by two different folks at Maxxis:
TB96800300 is a 3C Maxterra EXO tire that weighs about 1000g
TB96800200 is a 3C Maxgrip 2 ply DH casing that weighs about 1255g
