    Rear mech ?????

Notice a lot of the 2x10 builds use the long cage rear mech. I read med cages could be used for double chainrings. I want to use the med cage for my build. Is this a problem?

Using a medium cage on a triple will work for all gears except the small front and the smallest about 3 rear. You will not have enough derailleur scope to take up all the slack. You won't be snapping a chain. If you don't shift into those gear combos you will be fine. This is for advanced riders. So no problem for a double.

My understanding is that the medium cage is for 2x10 and the long cage is for 3x10.

shimano medium cage does not officially have enough range to handle a typical 2x10 spread of about 27T. The medium cage I believe officially can handle up to 25T of spread. Im running a medium cage with 27T of spread. Theoretically it will be too slack on small/small but it seems fine. In any case I never use that gear combo anyway.

Wrong. Shimano medium cage mtb RDs (GS) have a 33-35t total capacity.

The Zee and Saint are short cage (SS) with a 25t capacity.

Cassette I plan to use is XT 11-36 cassette? Chainset will be XT double 26-38. So will it work on a Med cage? First build so I want to get it right. If not , going to 11-34 cassette should do it....right? I have not seen any 29ers built with an 11-34 cassette !!

I built my bike up with a an XT drivetrain. 11-36 cassette, 26-38 double crank, and med cage Shadow + derailleur. It works perfect.

Just saw this thread and was planning on going Shimano 1x10 using 30T (Wolf) front and 11-36T cassette. Which rear derailleur would work best, GS or SGS for this type of set up? Thanks!

With a single ring, you can go short cage.

I'm running 11-36 tooth cassette with a MRP 30 tooth Bling Ring and the Zee SSW short cage free ride rear derailleur. Works great.
