    Mavic wheel creak

I have mavic st crossmax 29er wheels and the wheel creaks like crazy on my aluminum single speed frame bike but is perfect on my steel framed single speed. Any ideas on how to solve this major annoying problem.

Try putting some lube where the spokes connect to the hub. Mine were making an annoying pinging noise and doing this quieted it down.

Wheel creak is a symptom of loose spokes. I had a couple of customers with Mavic Crossmax wheels that creaked after 10-12 rides. Threw the wheels in a truing stand and they were slightly out of true. After a re-true and re-tension, noise was gone.

Thanks for that tip! But the creak goes away for a couple of miles after I change my qr skewer, I'm on my 4th skewer and the wheel is 3days old and it did it on the first ride.
And it's weird to me that it only creaks on my aluminum frame.

What type of QR skewer are you using? If it's anything but a Shimano QR, ditch it and install a Shimano QR.

QR Skewers that use an external cam don't provide enough clamping force like an internal cammed skewer does.

I run nothing but Shimano Skewers and never had a QR issue.

There could be an irregularity in the frame's dropout that doesn't mesh well with the Mavic hub.
Could be as simple as paint between the frame and hub.
Something is allowing movement back there.
Since you report the issue just between this frame and this wheelset with a variety of skewers, I'd now look at the frame.
You can scuff and cleanup up the dropouts with sandpaper and then wipe clean with rubbing alcohol and see if that helps.

Also, what kind of dropouts are on the bike?
A new hub that doesn't quite line up in the same place as the prior hub or causes the skewer to clamp in a slightly different spot due to more contact area/less contact area between frame and hub/skewer can cause what you are describing.
If anything can be cleanup up or tightened up on the rear dropouts, I'd look at that too.

check to make sure the hub isnt loose. most mavic wheels come with one of these to tighten up the hub as they have a tendency to work themselves loose

I changed the skewer (3rd one worked) and then I got a metal mavic hub tool to tighten up the hub, the plastic ones stripped out.

Good deal!! Which skewer are you using now? And where did you get a metal Mavic tool from? My plastic one is starting to get stripped as well.

I'm using a Shimano xt skewer! And I cleaned the rear drop-outs, the mavic tool I got at a LBS, they had an extra one so we did a trade!
