i see that Enve makes a wheelset that should run about $2000-2500.
If I was going to spend just $1,000-1500, what wheelset would give me the biggest bang for my buck and allow a significant weight savings over the WTB Frequency wheelset?
The the WTB Stryker TCS XC 29" wheelset is just over 1600g...but for a long travel Tallboy, aren't you going to want a pretty solid wheelset over feather light?
Lots of people are jumping on the Chinese carbon rim bandwagon and they seem to be working out quite well. I plan on ordering some for myself in a few months.
i originally was going to buy a regular tallboy carbon but waited and ordered the tallboy LTC. i now find my self with 2 sets of good wheels, an all black set of Industry 9 XC on Stans Arch rims..... then i found a great deal for a set of Industry 9 Enduro hubs on stans Arch rims. unfortunately the enduro set has pewter/purple spokes... i paid 490 and 600 for the two sets on ebay. been tempted by the chinese carbon from light bicycle but couldnt pass up a deal on a set of I9's for what i paid
I wouldn't be so quick to dismiss the frequency rims. Mine have performed very well, and the I23 weighs 50grams lighter than the Stans flow that so many people love.
*edit* I read that wrong. Thats the 26" weight. The 29" I23 weighs 5grams more than the flow.
thanks in advance for all your help and comments, everyone! i am 157lbs, ride in Seattle and all over the PacNW and will use the bike for general 'Trail' riding. lots of steep climbs and i like to do a lot of jumping and quick descending, although after 22 years of riding, i ride pretty lightly on the bike. pretty much just general XC with doing nothing more than a 3" drop. sounds like the WTB Frequency that comes stock is actually a pretty good and light wheelset from what i am hearing. if i don't want to go for $2500 for a set of Enve wheels, what would be one or two other good options for me that would provide a good weight savings from the stock WTB frequency wheelset? thanks so much in advance for your help and replies.
Just looking at the SPX built kit (XT) and it looks like the wheels are Frequency i23 with DT Swiss Comps, alloy nips, and DT 350 hubs. So your actually looking at around 2000g for the wheelset which I would consider light but I'm 60lbs heavier than you. They're definitely a "Trail" wheelset.
If you do your homework and watch the web, you can find some great deals on some carbon Easton Havens. I found some in March for $1600 out the door from Bike Bling.
Eastons are great wheels but the biggest problem is sourcing them. Unless they are stocked by LBS they are hard to get. I have a set of Easton Haven aluminums with about 2000 miles on them and they have performed flawlessly, 6'4" 210lbs. 1300watts of max power. Finding a set of carbon havens for 1600 is a good price for sure. Enjoy them.
