    Gear Shifter Cables

I just got a Shimano Zee 10 speed rear shifter and it came wit ha cable attached. It is possible to change gear shifter wires from one derailleur to another?
I know that the cables from my X5 shifters work, so is it possible for me to disconnect the X5 from the cable and attach the Zee to that?

You could but you should use the new one, and new housing as well.

But will the new cable work for my bike?
Do they send the cable as long as possible so that people will be able to cut them down?
Also, Is it possible for the cables to bend while still in the box?

The cable is a $3 part. Housings are a bit more, and can have some time in them as well - I think I get better performance if I try not to butcher the ends.

For me, reusing a cable isn't feasible enough to be worth the trouble. Reusing housings... sure, but best practice is to put shiny new ones on every year or so.

You can attach it and it should shift just like your X5 was shifting. Or you can do a full length run with REI Novara(Jagwire) housing and plastic ferrules. Their slick stainless cable instead of what came with it. You'll have butter smooth shifts.---with either derailleur.

I bought a XT Shadow + derailleur as well, so that is why I will ditch the X5 shifters.

That's a good upgrade. I would not consider using the old housing. Do the FULL length REI $19 slick stainless cable/housing kit with 4 extra feet of housing off their bulk roll if you want to do a front. Include a good sized loop at both ends. Use a sharp oiled cable cutter and carefully open and clean the cut end.

I am converting to 1x10, so do you think that the wire the shifters came with will be long enough, and if they are not, can my LBS put new, longer wires on the shifters. Right now I don't have the space or money to buy a bike mechanic stand and all the tools I would need.

New cables should be plenty long enough for any application except a tandem bike, cut off the excess.

Okay, thank you. I will post pictures once the whole package has arrived and has been assembled.
