My favorite 29er derailer is an XT.

A front derailer doesn't do that much. I wouldn't put too much thought in to it. What don't you like about your current DR?

my buddy had an X7 on his bike and the shifting sucked, and was way too loud in anything but the middle few gears. I swapped in an old xt derailleur I had laying around and he has been raving about it ever since. Shimano is still tops on front mechs

Anything attached at the other end with a twist shifter. Trimming the front is paramount to trail happiness and front mech setup glee.

One of my bikes is all X0. The other is XT front, X0 rear, X0 shifters. Both run KMC chains. My nod goes to the XT.

I have an X7 on bikes and none of them shift very well, just looking for something better. I will give the XT a try.

my 13santa cruz superlight 29 came with an xt and a plane jane shimano crank, 10spd and the chain either rubs on the smallest rear gear or the largest rear gear when in the middle ring?

Have to agree with other posters, Shimano XT is probably best bang for the buck in front derailleurs. I have XTR on a couple of bikes, and while they do seem to shift a bit better unless you manage to snag XTR at mega-closeout pricing (which I did) they are not worth paying the 2-3 times what XT goes for.
