I read somewhere on here about a guy who cut up an old tube and used zip ties to fasten it to the down tube. I just did it to my bike tonight and it seems like a reasonable option that should protect the tube well.

I just use a couple layers of black Gorilla Tape around my BB shell and up to the middle of my downtube. Change when needed. Works for me.

Good idea! No troubles removing that stuff when it's time for a new layer?

It varies. Obviously it wants to stay on, which is a good thing and requires infrequent changeover. Since I'm just putting tape right over where it already was I don't spend any time scrubbing the tacky tape residue off of the tube. Keep in mind this is for stones and abrasions. If you are worried about rolling over and onto an actual rock, this setup won't give the protection that a plastic guard would. It has never been an issue for me though.

Has anyone tried one of the new DIY paint protection kits? Noticed them last time I was at the auto parts store. Something like this:

3M Paint Defender Tested: Does DIY Paint Protection Work?
    or
Exceptional Protection - Armor All Custom Shield Coating

I was planning on trying it out - Ill report back if I do!

    Shelter protective tape:

    Shelter Bike Frame Protection

Works perfectly, doesn't trap grit or turn yellow, silences and protects as advertised

Great frames deserve this, especially carbon eggshells

I have this installed in my Trance X 29er. it protects the downtube, however it scratches the paint when you install/remove it. Also it accumulates dirt in-between the guardz and downtube.
