I have a Cane Creek 40 on my Tallboy LT. It has started creaking badly in the last several weeks. I have disassembled it and found that it is the bottom cartridge bearing. It is apparently rubbing against the headset race. The bearing itself is in great condition but you can see where it is rubbing the finish off of the outside of the cartridge bearing (on the tapered part)due to it rubbing. I cleaned it and the race and put some Phil Wood grease in the race and on the bearing. It immediately quit creaking for about a week. It's doing it again now. What is the best thing to use for lubricant on this? Or do I need to replace the headset? It's not even a year old and I don't ride nearly as hard as most.
