Big Wheel DH
I'm toying with the idea of a larger wheeled DH project. Debating the relative merits of 29 vs 650b but my question for you guys is, if I go 29, what would you recommend for tires and rims? I'm a huge fan of 2.5 Minions on my 26er DH bike but I'm worried about the 29er versions being less burly and harder rubber. Thoughts? And I have no idea where to start with rims.
- Syntace W35 MX wheelset. Limit - 120kg.
- Sun Ringle MTX 33 rim.
Thanks. I'm about 80kg, intending to use these as a properly aggressive DH wheel. Those Syntace rims look promising.
Bueller? Anyone have tire recommendations?
Only choices in my book are Ardents or the Hans Damph... Rate both of them taking into account whats available.... Have had more time on the Ardents, shorter time on the Hans Damph, but me likey big time...
Been waiting for years it seems for the Minions 29ers.....
The_Lecht_Rocks: whafe - cheeers - may i offer an official apology for the wagon wheeler "dis-belief"
My set up is a Lenz PBJ with Dorado.
For wheels I run i9s with Salsa gordo rims.
Tires i have WTB Dissents with QBP thornproof tubes. Only way not to flat. 9 rides this year and countless rides the last 2 years.
Tires are the factor right now. I maxxis puts out the minnions for a DH casting I will be in love.
I sold my 26er DH bike. All I ride is the 29er now.
Salsa Gordo, Sun MTX33, Kris Holm 29 rims.
Look for some WTB Dissents (discontinued) or hope for the Maxxis Minion in a DH 29er casing
Prototype Maxxis Minion 29" x 2.5" and new DHR 2 Tires - Interbike 2011 - Pinkbike
tires will really limit you. maxxis minion (maybe someday), spec butcher (out end of summer), hans dampf, ardent, purg, wtb dissident (if you can find them). no real good options for 29'' dh rubber.
Panaracer had something in the works as well. Hans Dampf Super gravity? Drop them a line.
And there is Intense 2951
Why Not? Prototype Intense 2951 - Features - Vital MTB
There was a prototype from Canfield Brothers as well.
However the best and the only one available option is Lenz Park Bike Jam with Dorado. Costy, but a good bike. Check Mikesee posts and videos on it.
Well, back up a sec...
You got a frame in mind? As far as I know, there are no DH 29er frames yet, or are you going to fabricate something, or frankenbike something?

At the SOC I was assured that there will be at least one more batch coming of the Dissent tire from WTB.
Abandoned the 26" wheel in May '03
