    1x10 for XC

What is the largest chainring size you would recommend for XC?
I bought a 36T chainring and was wondering if it was too big (as my current middle ring is a 33T).

That would depend upon how strong you are. Took me 2-3 weeks to return to a "comfort zone of pain" on my local climbs after dropping my 26/38 for a 32T Wolf Tooth ring. I wouldn't dream of a 36T ring in a 1x10 setup where I live, but if you're super fit or don't have steep, long climbs, maybe it'll work for you.

I have not used my granny gear for two months, or my top gear for that matter.
I will keep my old crankset, so if I think that a 36 is too hard, then I will take my old middle ring and use that instead.

Recently switched to 1x10 with a 32T WolfTooth front chainring. Still growing into it, especially on the longer uphill climbs. For me personally, I don't need anything bigger in the front, but the trails I frequent has some serious hills. With the 32T in the front running to the 11T in the back, I rarely use this higher gear as it is.
