Smile 10 speed chain on a 9 speed cassette?

Looking for a new chain to go with a sram 990 (three rings in front) but most chains that I find say for a 10 speed cassette. Can a get a 10 speed chain and break it down to run on a 9 speed cassette????

    You probably can.
My friend mechanic says, if its a most do situation you can use chain meant for more gears on less speeded cassett but never the other way around, never use 8/9 speed chain on 10speed cassett.

I'm not sure of the correct answer, but I can say you shouldn't be having any trouble finding a 9spd chain.

9 speed chains are readily available but a 10 speed chain will work fine too.

KMC X10 will be a long wearing and inexpensive choice. Better shifting than Sram chain.
It will actually work better. The side plate thickness is reduced to make the chain skinnier. The roller width and gear tooth width are the same between 9 and 10.
