Van Dessel Factory Rider Lee Unwin says "hello"

Good afternoon everyone, my name is Lee Unwin I'm old to the race seen but new to this forum scene. I wanted to share my quick story. I took last year away from being fully sponsored so I could look for a really great company to work with. I am very happy to say that my first choice became my last choice. The guys over at VDS build beautiful bikes but they are also the guys that pick up the phone when you have questions which is hard to find these days. I will be racing as their factory 24 hour racer next year both single speed rigid and FS. I have raced on 26" for years, but am very excited about going to 29 this year. Hope to see you all out there soon.

Hi Lee, good to have you here.

So what the threshold to land a pro ride at Van Dessel? Beat the owner in a bike race?

What are your big hopes and focusses for the 2007 race season?

Do these posts seem a little contrived to anyone else?

A new poster starts off with a shill post that immediately gets a positive reply from a Moderator. It's almost like these two talked beforehand to discuss how their plan would go down. Have you ever seen America's Funniest Home Videos when it's obvious that the entire gag was set up?

Dang! You folks in Alabama are tough. Do you open your door with a shotgun in hand to greet everyone at the front door like you did with the above post?

Welcome to Lee and best of luck preparing for the upcoming race season on the big wheels.

To me it just seems like one of those shaky gray areas. You really want people from all levels to participate, and it's great to get details and stuff from a factory rider (since a lot of us will never brush shoulders with them anywhere else). At the same time you know their job is to make their sponsors happy--preferably by helping to sell more bikes.

But, If Lee would have posted and mentioned the bikes he would be riding *without* posting pics/specs I think someone would have immediately asked for more details and gotten the pics/specs anyway

So, not that it matters to anyone else at all, I'm looking forward to more posts from Lee. It'll be interesting to hear about his transition to 29".

Also, I may be naive but it seems to me that the moderators, including Cloxxki, do a pretty good job of walking that line--not an easy task.

You're right. I demand that the moderators immediately flame all new posters, sponsored riders, and anyone with a positive comment about a product.

I've always like the looks of those bikes. If (more like when) I am in the market for a FS 29er, that Devil is on my short-list.

    Caution; Merge; Workers Ahead!

Come on guys.. lets settle down here..

The Admin allows certain things on here, and not others. There are posting guidelines that we try to stick to.

If you have a real complaint about a post, then PM the senior Mods and explain why.

If this nonsense from a couple of posters keeps up, I will lock this thread.

i used to be an irc junkie, but now i am a forum junkie, 29er forum to be exact.

irc had this cool feature call ignore list, so anything your favorite idiot types, will not be seen by you.

but i dont think this can be replicated into a forum.

Actually, MTBR has an ignore feature: go to "User CP" and then "Buddy/Ignore Lists"

Very handy feature for certain posters

What MTBR.com guidelines did he violate?

    http://www.mtbr.com/messageboard/pos...idelines.shtml

That being said, here are some specific reasons why we remove certain messages:

    1. The message insults or degrades another member of the community.
    2. The message contains profanity, offensive language, or racial epithets.
    3. The message is an advertisement or spam.
(NOTE: It has been an "unwritten" rule for us to let it slide, when people who buy an Mtbr Classified ad, post in the forums. However, due to the recent increase in these ads, we will now be locking these types of posts. And you may NOT post an ad in more than 1 forum.)
    4. The message contains obscene or pornographic images/photos/text/videos.
    5. The message promotes illegal activity (at our discretion).
    6. The message has been posted to more than 2 boards. Posting the same message to multiple boards is spam, and all posts may be removed and the user may be banned. Please post to the most relevant board only, no more than 2.
    7. The message is posted as "flame-bait" and is posted to incite flames and insults.

Is everyone concerned that Lee violated rule #3 by saying hello, announcing that he would be "upgrading to 29"er wheels this coming season, had been selected to be a factory 24 hour racer for Van Dessel riding two of their bikes - a SS Ramble Tamble and a geared Jersey Devil FS and then - sin of all sins - showing a picture of both bikes"? Is that pure advertisement? Spam?

Or is that those pictures fall under Rule #4 as being "pornographic"?

Not sure why everyone has their boxer shorts in a wad. A racer switches to the big wheels and stops by the forum to say "Howdy! I've switched and am excited about it. Here's what I'll be riding."

Niner, Salsa, Carver, Fisher, Willits, etc.. and many, many others stop by from time to time. Pictures galore. Opinions. Comments. Success stories. Failure stories. And lots of questions get asked and answered.

How about if Lee stopped by to say something like this?:

"Howdy! I'm Lee and new to this forum because I will be racing 29"ers this season being sponsored by a company that makes big wheeled bikes. Can't say who the company is. Can't say what I'll be riding. Can't show you a picture or two of my equipment. Can't provide any links to the company or their equipment. So don't anyone ask about all of that. I look forward to reporting back how the season unfolds on the big wheels. Over and out."

Hum drum boring tease. Good to see that the 29"er forum has grown over the past few years with all types of participants because it means more riders have tossed a leg over a 29"er. Bad to see that this has resulted in many more posts that break rules 1 and 7 from the guidelines.
