This whole entire bike retails for $100 less than either the RIP9RDO or Mach429 Carbon _frames_. Give up a pound, save $100 and get a free build kit. Sounds like a deal to me.

Is the red on the frame accurately depicted in these photos? A bit on the orange side of the spectrum?

No, it's "normal" red. Just picked up mine yesterday.

With less travel at the same cost, I don't see why anyone would want this over the Enduro Comp 29er. Hopefully it weights in a little less.

There's a very simple reason: Specialized now has a ridiculous one-year warranty on the frame, while Trek gives lifetime on the front triangle and five years on the swing arms. From someone who just cracked a frame, the Trek is a no brainer for the warranty alone.

It's absolutely incredible how they sell $3k+ bikes and give a one-year warranty on a piece of metal. It's like selling a car with a six-month warranty.

I got a 2014 EX8 29er from a local bike store and it performs great. I'm still adapting to it (after many years using an Ellsworth), but so far things are going good. It's my first 29er and I'm enjoying the extra stability and ability to run over things more easily.

On the downside, the bike came with an annoying noise caused by the front derailleur cable buzzing inside the frame (they now route the FD cable through the bottom tube.) It was annoying enough to have me take it back to the LBS and complain. They initially said they couldn't do much, but I tested other EX8s there (by tapping on the pedals with my hands) and they didn't have the buzz. I wonder if I was just unlucky. The mechanic said there's nothing inside the frame "guiding" the cable. He installed a cable guide with rubber grommets and the noise disappeared. I wonder how many people will have a similar problem (and why specifically my bike had it and not the others.) Now I have to remember to remove the guide when I replace that cable, a few years down the line.

It sucks buying a $3k brand new bike and have it "hacked" a week after it's out of the LBS. There should be some kind of lemon law for such things.
