I can say that the Gryphon (indeed all my frames) is designed to try and minimise the chance of overlap. That said, if you are on a medium with size 12 Carnacs, 185mm cranks, the ebb well forward and 2.4" tyres it may well hit.

    Anyhow, as this is a photo thread here are some of my own. Recently been feeling a lot of love for the Gryphon again!

    ... I'm 5'10" with freakishly long arms, 33" pant inseam, 11.5 US shoes (47 Sidi Doms) and ride a Large Swift with 180mm XTR cranks and a 2.3" WTB Exiwolf up front. I got no toe overlap. There is an inch and a half of clearance or so, and that is plenty.

    No toe overlap here.

    BTW, the bike rides great, even with a 38mm offset Reba set to 80mm. I may give 100mm a go to see what happens. The thing is like seriously buttery smooth over rocky stuff, yet not a noodlely or flexy (unlike some other major brand 29er steel bikes I've tried).

    My only real complaint is that the downtube decal started chipping off already from my U-Lock when it was on my car bike rack. My U-Lock is coated with rubbery stuff too. The decal came off awfully easily.

    GT, the blue Gryphon is my personal bike, not intending to do it for production.

    Sorry, no immediate plans to return the geared specific Swift, though you are welcome to have a geared specific Pegasus and I've done a few like that.

    Strange to hear of decal chipping off, hasn't been reported to me as a problem before. Though if driving along with bike on a rack with a u-lock through it it doesn't really surprise me. If you need a replacement decal let me know, I have some vinyl ones which can just be applied over the top if you prefer.

    Completely divided opinion on whether to do a disc brake version of the Kite - I should have suspected as much... Marty & Los, I kinda agree with you in terms of braking power, but I think in truly mucky conditions discs have an advantage simply because cantis are prone to collecting mud. I did a race last season which was outrageously muddy on my Peregrine in cross mode. I went past a number of folks who'd stopped just to clear out mud so their wheels could turn again. Anyhow, I'm still a little in two minds though as discs would pretty much require a complete re-design of the frame I think we'll stick with cantis, possibly with a view to doing a disc version in 2011.

    yeah I agree, singlespeeds always look nicer, but my knees won't have any of it! Off to get her dirty now....

    An update to the Peregrine here in the shop. Put an Alfine set up on it with a JTek shifter. Works quite well, and the bike is only up two pounds to 26.5. Not too shabby, eh?

    Muti mode Gryphon

    had a month off and took my Gryphon on about 1200 miles of road and 400 in the dirt.....

    couldn't have been happier with the 2 sets of tires and 2 cogs and a arro bar

    was a great trip with a killer bike

    My Singular build.



    After some experimenting I ended up using mostly the continental cyclocross tires. I switch to a pair of firecross only when the trail justifies a bigger balloon tire.



    Just to try the maximum tire with I could fit, I had a kenda 1.95 on the back, which actually touched the stay as I pedaled and a kenda 2.1 on the front. Fun

    a lot easier to feather the front brake keeping it from sliding in muck using v brakes.

    Really looking forward to more info on the kite.

    That looks like a de-anodized and polished Sette Edge/Ritchey Pro/Forte Team stem. I did the same thing to my stem. I love shiny silver parts.

    That’s a Velo Orange Stem. The idea was to make the bike as red and shiny as possible

    The alfine and Jtek work great with the Peregrine. Does anyone know if Jtek will be releasing a shifter for the new 11 sp alfine?

    Pricing will be similar to other frames in the range. I plan to offer a steel or carbon fork option. Getting the correct colour match for the carbon fork is tricky as I really want to continue to use a powder coat for the frame, and obviously you can't powder coat carbon. However I'll be testing some things with the painters and hope to get it right. Availability however has been pushed back to 2011. It wasn't going to happen in time for this cross season, and I figured there's not much point releasing a 'cross frame in January, so I want to make sure it's perfect for autumn next year.

    In the mean time I'll be working on bringing the Osprey (classic lugged steel road frame) out in time for spring '11. Oops, sorry for the OT road talk. This should be a nice one though!

    accepting suggestions? what about a clearcoat "tint" over carbon weave?
    if for example, the frame is a metallic blue, a blue clear over the carbon will make the fork play with the frame.
    kind of the same way brushed ti and polished ti play off each other
    If steel is real then aluminium is supercallafragiliniun!

    Notice the cool replaceable derailleur hanger that lets you go SS or geared.

    I'm also really spoiled with the Kind Shock dropping seatpost.

    paint/finish has held up well with the 2 k of miles i've put on my gryphon... seems to have a great feel.... flexy but not to much... a great steel ride.... i'm about 200lbs

    ... but I have not noticed any lateral flex, or axial flex (unlike some other 29er steel bikes I have ridden) but the ride is nice and buttery. Then again, all I have to realistically compare it to is my MC29er... the only other steel mountain bike I have owned in the last 20 years.

    Stiffer then Mary

    Compared to my Haro Mary the Singular Swift is quite a bit stiffer. I set up both the Mary and the Swift with the same 1x9 drivetrain. The Mary would drop the chain or phatom shift when peddeling hard out of corners or going from unweighted to weighted. I couldn't ride that bike with out a chain guide. Not an issue with the Swift. Now I wish I had a rear hub that engaged faster. I think everyone that rides with me would also agree that I am faster on my Swift then I was on Mary.

    Another Swift (this is the former Single Speed version)

    Yes, it is versatile

    Geared 3 x 9 (I bought it this way and rode a few months of local trails and one longer enduro event this way)



    Fully rigid Single Speed



    I also had it as a suspended single speed - very good. Just couldn't find a pic now (will post later if I found one).

    This summer I rode a lot of AM 26" FS again and got a bit spoiled (too comfortable), and now I wanted to try this set-up with the Singular. Fully rigid, fixed gear, alt bars and 45mm Panaracer Firecross tires. This is going to be my winter commuter and/or "monster cross" type bike! Lovin' it already. Not sure if I am ever going to hit the technical trails with the direct drive though..heh. But it flies on the gravel roads and smooth trails.

    Update:

    100mm Reba works great for me! I had it set to 80mm and stretched it out. No real loss in nimbleness. I tried this on my Monocog29er and it was not happy. Front end got all floppy in the turns. It tracked weird. No such issues here.

    I just scored another set of 180mm XTRs with a 5 arm compact spider. Once I sell a few more parts from the bin, I'm going to put together a gear and brake set I can just slap on and have a sweet geared hardtial as needed. Winter is coming up soon, and I don't really wanna take out the RacerX29er in the slop.

    Has anybody tried using a front derailleur on this frame? There is a cable stop on the bottom of the BB shell, but it seems to be tucked too far under to keep the cable from sawing into the shell. It's also awfully hard to find a derailleur clamp shim for 30.0mm, but I can figure something out.

    since my last post quite early in this thread, i have been getting in a few rides on my swift ...

    what i found with mine is that i seemed to be sitting too far back and the front end was very light and it would understeer in anything loose especially at speed ... lining it up with my el mariachi i see the seat tube is a bit more relaxed in comparison, so i moved the seat forward about 1cm [no setback seatpost] and replaced the test 110mm stem with a 120mm one, and dropped it by 5mm ... stem is inverted and with the wide flat bars it rides really nice now, much more stable ...

    currently it is setup with small block 8 tyres, 1x9 [32x36-12] and it seems to go much faster than the other two 29ers i have ... even the guys i go out biking with are grumbling now ...
