Usually 120mm is considered safe. 140mm could stress the head tube area beyond what the bike was designed for.
A 120mm Fox 34 is a major performance upgrade. You'll likely be happy with that. Other upgrades would be 30mm or more inner width rims and high volume rounded profile tires like Bontrager XR2 Teams. 2.35 or 2.6. If you are considering better wider wheels Boost 15x110 for a front is an option that would affect your fork choice. You'd want a Boost Fox 34.

Aside from the real potential of damage to the frame it's also going to raise up the BB considerably and generally screw up how the bike rides.

My opinion: on that bike don't go over 120mm travel.

If you want a 140 fork bike I would look for a good deal on a used niner ros 9.

I'm seriously considering a new Scale project bike...fox 34 120 step cast is what I would put on it...building a super light weight fun climbing machine.

I'm not so sure you can go with the recommended wider rims and tires (I believe 2.4 is the max)...I was thinking Ikon 2.35 on i25 rims
