    Older Bontrager Racelite wheel question

My unknown vintage 29er rear wheel seems a little gritty so I did a search to find a service manual for a rebuild.
Found a manual for 2003 that gives service for DT Swiss built "Comp" rear hub that seems to mostly match but doesn't reference it as a 29er wheel here:

I think this helped when I did some sealed bearing lub last year but not sure and the hub seem worse now that then.

Anyone aware of newer info specific to 29er hub?

    It's non TLR definitely DT.

If you can post a pic of the hub (at least the axle ends, preferably also freehub body) I should be able to get you the info you need.

    Bontrager Racelite Pics

Don't know what you can determine from these but thanks for the offer.

It's a little hard to tell from the pics, but it appears you have a DT star ratchet based wheel. If both sides have an endcap with pressed knurled steel ring on an otherwise aluminum piece then then that is what you have. There would be no threaded axle or wrench flats. Also it would have an aluminum freehub body, black in color, but yours looks silver (maybe just faded) and doesn't have the wear marks you usually see on an aluminum one.

I have the same wheels and several other DT hubs. Basic service is nice and easy. If bearings need to be replaced, most are the same as any other hub except 1 which does require a special DT tool. The other bearings are just easier to change with that tool kit, but it's not required for those 3. Also there is a special grease for the star ratchets but people have had some success using other light greases (don't know what though).

Either of these DT tech docs will tell you how to do it. The 350 is the result of those early DT built hubs like this, important if you had the front wheel.

I have the bontrager spec sheet for the hub. It's a pdf, but here are 2 screen shots for it.

    Hope that helps.

It's not a star ratchet model, it has two pawls and the freehub is steel.

Closest manual I've found is the link above that has the DT Onyx-based "Comp". My hub disassembles like the Comp.

I've had these apart before but the innards "exploded" so I may have lost some parts.

    Thanks for the DT stuff.

I have a set of Cannondale built on DT also.

Yeah when I posted my reply I hoped maybe you had the race x lite, not the race lite. That star ratchet style is what I'm familiar with. The rxl is what my info was for. I've had only 1 onyx based hub apart in my life. It wasn't hard to work on, just when s**t goes bad inside there, it can go real bad.

So if it's a steel freehub and has a threaded steel axle it probably is an onyx based hub. The race series was a formula hub. I have an onyx manual on my computer where it does no good (once again pdf) but dt does have the 370 on its site which is the renamed onyx (I don't think they changed anything).

Hope all of this helps. If not, I think I got nothing left.

That looks to be it and just what I need.

Different vintages had a spacer inside the freehub and I see that the newer version doesn't.

Thanks for the help. I owe you one.
