    Thanks a lot guys!

the headset cap is from purelycustoms.com

the cost of the build is like buying a Niner Jet9 with an XT build.

I know I should have gone that route, call it stupid or bike crazy, just more fun doing it that way. Just been testing it around the block, tomorrow I hit the trails. If i go below -200lbs then maybe a FS jet9 as a price but this time but the whole bike. (32 lbs to go)

Ride safe and thanks again for the compliments.

Sweet bike man! Good luck with the 200lbs. You'll get there. I went from 225 in May of this year to 185 now with about 75/25 riding/hiking.

    like the thumbies

How to the TT shifters go with the rear mech?

I like this set up, & i was thinking about a C'dale roady rebuild/resto I'm doing that might work as down tube shifter as well if they work with tumbies?

BTW, Love your buildd i have Bike envy
29er you just know when ur ready!!!!

The TT shifters work well with the XO and XX derailleurs, I tripled check in the compatibility chart
At the SRAM website. Paul's thumbies are great!

I started MTB'ing when the sought after shifters were the XT thumb shifters! I guess I'm an old fart, back in the days of biopace! (Wth is that??)

thanks again for the comments, and yes the mud is missing! Just finished building, the mud/dirt will follow.

I have a Niner RIP 9 but wanted something rigid so just built up an EMD too. Taking it out on it's first ride tomorrow should be awesome.

I'm 5'10 with a 30 inseam. Medium was too big for me, when I demo'd the older EMD frame. I kinda have a weird body, short legs, long trunk and normal arms. Using it with an 80mm stem. no issues, in hitting the shoe with the front wheel while turning.

Man, I'm totally copying that shifter setup . . . I didn't realize Paul was still making those things. Too bad it's so hard to find a single SRAM barcon (shifter for 1x). They are all pairs.

    Looks Great Joe!

I am getting so excited to build this bike up for my girl. We have gone through a few bikes in the last 6 months trying to find the right one for her! I am hoping the 2012 E.M.D is the one for her! We went with the Anodized black!

Carla, I am a fan though I don't own a Niner..You guys are having a demo day down here in S. Florida....I am hoping to try out a RIP and WFO (not for Florida riding) but for elsewhere! I built up a Jet9 for a friend up in DC and it changed him as a rider!

Less of a hijack, more of a homage

So, that's what might have been if I missed out on the 2011 frame. But I didn't.

Same 3 letters on the side and Hot Tamale color but different frame year and build

    WTB SST saddle
    Easton EA70 post
    Salsa clamp
Salsa Pro Moto 3 stem 90/-6degrees (not pictured yet)
    Salsa Pro Moto bars
    King headset/bike jewelry
    Lizard Northshore lock-ons
    Avid Speed Dials and BB7's
    Reba 100mm
Shimano LX shifter still rocking from my first hard tail 8 years ago
    XT shadow rear der (1x9)
    Truvativ Firex 1x cranks
Salsa Delgado rims with King rear and XT front hubs
Racing Ralph 2.4 up front, Geax aka out back
    Eggbeaters

Totals up to 26.4 #, pretty good for minimal investment. Great geometry, maneuverability, and climbs well.

Also what is the size/weight? I see you have lefties and cresties..so I don't think I can get the weight to what yours is set up with a 1X..but still would like to know

You would be exactly correct, it is a 1x10. I haven't weighed it yet, but I can tell you its less than 25 pounds, I think its closer to 24.

I will get more pictures up shortly, I am away from my home PC currently.

The black frame (at least I think so) looks amazing in person. It has a really nice matte finish that just looks stealthy as hell.

    More pics

    Hey Dubdriver,

I have attached a few more photos below. Tomorrow I expect to get the bike out and actually ride it.
The rear wheel is actually not the one I would normally use, I have a wheel that is DT Swiss with Stan's Crest also and it is more in line with the color scheme on the bike.
The gold accent on the stem is going to be red, I'm waiting for Crank Bros to bring out their color matching kit for the stems which I am told will be next month.
Oh and I weighed the bike, 23.2 pounds! Better than I expected.
Enjoy, and it sounds like you are very good to your wife!!

    Adrian.

Looks great man! I wish I had a lefty to throw on it for her. I am sure you already realize what kind of conversation pieces it is!

I hope it rides great, I am sure it will. I think Niner is going to be in Tampa next weekend for Fat Tire Fest (we'll be there). They are in Ocala, FL this weekend.

BTW...she's not my wife yet, but she is the love of my life. There is talk about marriage though. Its hard to let go of a fit girl that like beer and wings, going camping, and is faster in the trails than more than half of the guys down here!

    Thanks for the compliment.
I had the 2011 EMD in moon dust gray and just sold it to pay for this frame.
I rode this new frame with a rigid fork last weekend so it was hard to gauge how it rode. My instincts tell me that it should flex less than the 2011 model because of the hydroforming etc.
Personally I just really liked the color, the hydroformed tubing and the fact that I could transfer all my existing parts over.

It's awesome that you have a girlfriend that likes to ride. Definitely keep her!

I have yet to get to a Niner demo day, I had a chance to ride a RDO - those things are just amazingly smooth but have no pedal bob at all.

I'd be interested to see pics when you build your gf's bike up.

    Adrian.

Nice! I had a lefty on my 2011 air9 and loved it, wish I wouldn't have sold it

It looks good in your pics for sure

The day I looked at it at the shop I had a new air 9 black side by side and the emd just looked kinda cheap in comparison, I also took my badge off and sanded it down to give it the brushed look like the old badges.

That's a nice setup, I was running Sun Ringle wheels while I had the rigid fork on there, theyre the black flag pros. I basically got those early for next years project; I'm going to build up a Jet 9 RDO in licorice. At least that's the goal.
I'm running much the same front crank as you with a black MRP chain keeper. They work well.
It looks like you may want to shorten your chain though.

I saw that there are posts with both the 2011 and 2012 versions of the EMD. I was wondering if it is worth the extra $250 for the 2012 model since jenson is selling them for $300(I am planning on buying the frame first and adding parts as I get the money). The differences I saw were the tapered head tube and frame tubing. I will be commuting 1-2 miles everyday and riding trails 1-2 times a week. I super excited to build this bike and would appreciate some insight from someone who has owned the older version and recently upgraded to the newer version or just owners of the EMD.

If you are on a budget I'd say go for the 2011 frame - 300 bucks is a screaming deal.

+1 - put that $200 into better parts sooner. 2011 frame is also a bit lighter than the 2012 (half a pound, I think)

    Happy riding,

Poster #70 actually got his 2012 for the 2011 closeout deal since an online retailer ran out. I got the 2011 for $299 as well.. I just got it built up and would say it is definitely worth it... they even threw in a small bottle of touch up paint, how can you go wrong?

In my opinion I would go with the 2011 model. The money you save you can invest in a good wheelset or components.

    Thanks for the comments/

Post #70 is my buddy and he was upgraded to the 2012 model and I got the 2011, not mad but I can definitely see the differences and the changes they made, all for the better.

Color is amazing but in order to keep it looking fresh I put clear frame protector on 98% of the frame (doesn't help that the older models suffer from paint chipping).

Niner's and distributor/retailer's sweet deal on the frame saved me enough money to upgrade the hubs and fork that I wanted. Just happened to be the cheapest/good 29 frame at the time. This is actually a 'budget' build for me since I was able to take time and haggle prices on craigslist, pinkb!ke and local forum.

Excited to increase my endurance on this new lightweight-ish hardtail.

Yah its going to happen. I finished the build on Wednesday. It would have taken the shop 1 day to do them. So we wouldn't have the bike for Thanksgiving Day morning, and wouldn't be able to have it to ride on Friday in the morning. So that is on the "to do" list for this week coming! I didn't want to chop the cables until I knew how short they needed to be cut to on this frame.

2melow, great looking build! That shot angle, low seat and big tires really make it look like a bigger beefier bike!

My girlfriend loves hers and she put over 100mi on it over the weekend!

Looking forward to Your Niner Demo tomorrow and Saturday at Amelia in Miami. I have been wanting to swing a leg over your S.I.R.9 and A9C. My Salsa is great but I would like to explore other material options.

I've been waiting on a salsa mamasita for months and cancelled the order today and should have a Large version of this in a week. I really like the build. What's your take on your wheel choice now that you've had it a bit?

Very nice looking builds on the new Niner frames. Currently have an MCR that I am tired of and have been thinking about switching to an EMD since they have been discounting them lately... However, after seeing this thread, you couldn't give me a 2011. Decided that if I am going to switch, I am just going to go full price on a new 2012 Air or EMD. I really like the tapered head tube and the design of the tubes. Nice job on the build and best of luck with your weight loss goals.... Get that diet in check and you will see 195 in the blink of an eye!

Got pretty much the same deal.
+1 on the small bottle of touch up paint!

I've only got a couple of more pieces to the puzzle and I'll be building my 2011 EMD. The only thing I like better on the 2012 frame is the tapered head tube. I decided to save the extra couple of hundred bucks and pump that into upgraded parts.

There's just something about the old school tube look that gives me the warm fuzzies.
