My 2012 Soma Juice build ❤ Lots o' pics

While spending lots of time at my LBS trying to make my new Felt Nine 60 20" fit, I kept noticing my mechanic's gorgeous green Soma Juice....I would sit on it, grab the handlebars, touch the frame, ride it in the pkg lot, etc....EVERY time I came into the shop (which has been about 30 times over the past 45 days). Once I realized that this particular Felt wasn't going to work I decided to further dig into the geometry of the Soma Juice. I knew a 20" (his bike) may have worked but I didn't want anymore "maybes." I found one of only two places in the country that had a 22" frame left and jumped on it (one of those places is now sold out). The drop down of the top tube sold me (they aren't doing that anymore with 2013 forward).

After spending a few weeks on this site and realizing I could make some changes that would make my next bike even better I did just that. My LBS has been fantastic. They swapped the tires and wheels over and even swapped a straight steerer SID XX shock for my Soma.

Here is what I ended up with:

Soma Juice Candy Apple Green frame - 22"
    Raceface Atlas Turbine Blue handlebars
    Raceface Atlas Blue stem
    FSA Blue spacers
    Chris King Pewter headset
Rockshox SID XX solo air fork w/remote lockout (2013)
Stan's Arch EX wheels/hubs (moved from Felt)
Schwalbe Tubeless Nobby Nics 2.35" (moved from Felt)
Raceface Evolve Limited Sterling 175mm crankset and BB
    Black Ops pedals
Raceface 34T front chainring with blue Raceface bashguard (with green KCNC chainring bolts)
    Shimano XT 10sp cassette
    Third Eye Chainguard e*thirteen chainguard
    Shimano M785 XT brakes
    Shimano XT RT75 rotors
    Shimano M780 XT shifter
Shimano Zee shadow+ rear derailleur (much shorter cage)
    Raceface Next SL Carbon seatpost
    Salsa Lip Lock seatpost clamp
    Jagwire Ripcord white derailleur cable
Trek wide bolt on white grips
White/Blue Most Ocelot Fi'zi:k Airione seat

Here are some pics...what do you think?

I may put something on the cable to prevent rubbing...not sure where else the cable could have gone, though.

Beautiful ! I wanted to ask about the chain ring. I am running 1x10 and I use an MRP chain guide. Is that black piece coming off your seat tube a "chain guide" ?
What kind of bike do you have?
    A Sledgehammer.
Dang! You got shocks, pegs...lucky! You ever take it off any sweet jumps?

Sweet build, beautiful aesthetics. One of the nicest looking bikes I've seen on mtbr. As others have said - time to get it dirty!

It's called the Third Eye Chain Watcher. $9. REI sells them, amazon.com has them. I was skeptical as first because it was so cheap. Man, does it do the trick. Simple, effective, what else do you need? It did come with a metal hose clamp. That works but I wasn't about to risk scratching my bike. It slips inside of the black nylon piece (in between the sleeve, not directly on the frame). I actually lined the inside (the part the does touch the frame) with a fitted piece of an old tube and then used a black zip tie instead of the metal hose clamp. Perfect fit and you hardly notice it.

Thanks for the compliments on the bike. It was awesome putting this thing together piece by piece (even though I didn't physically build it).

I love those CrMo frames. I retired my CrMo to my 13y old who is enjoying it and it is a brute, great to learn on for him. I am wondering about the Saint rear Derailer. What made you choose it over the XT? I know that the Saint 4 piston brakes are the best but not so sure about the derailer. Nevertheless, I love your ride. I ride a 23" but if I could get a 22" like that I would love it.

It's actually the Zee rear derailleur. I went for the short cage but also wanted the new shadow+ technology.....It is smoother than my long cage XT rear D I was running on my Felt and it makes for the quietest ride I've ever experienced on a mountain bike. Roots, rocks, jumps....no chain slap. I love it.

    UPDATE:

After 2 rides now I can tell you that I have never experienced a bike like this. The feel of steel is real. For anyone that plays golf it's like comparing a cast club to a forged club. I absolutely love it.

The ZEE rear D is awesome as well. Zero noise on some pretty rough terrain.

Looks great! Dig the green/blue color combo. Two points though:

    1) Why just the Third Eye chainwatcher and not a full on chain guide? I would think more chain security would be better.

    2) Holy headset spacers Batman! You must be tall!

I just wanted less "stuff" there...I actually picked up a blackspire stinger but apparently bought the wrong type....I would totally be up for something else...do you not think this would keep it on?

I am 6'2 and a 1/2" and just like the bars up a little...I had back surgery in 2007 so to hunched over and I need pry bars to get me out of a chair after a bike ride....Appreciate the compliment on the bike...Have a good weekend.

    Hey, how about mine

I like how you mounted the remote lockout on the bottom side, I did the same. Everyone else I see mounts it on the top where it risks getting damaged.

Great looking build! Very clean, great job!

Beautiful bike and outstanding photography! As mentioned.... great bike porn for sure!
I'm building a lime-green EWR, considering some custom paint highlights on it.
I got a deal on some SID white forks , but dunno how to make them look better....have you thought of changing yours? Looking for some ideas....
I should have mine together in mid-January, can't wait!!

Thanks for the compliment on the bike and the photography...combined with golf I unfortunately have 3 pretty expensive hobbies....

As far as the SID goes, I think it looks badass as it stands. I think the ONLY color to have in a fork is white...just my opinion. You could always layer it with stickers.

Thanks...I took a nasty spill on it on Saturday...not a single scratch on the bike somehow but at 41yrs old I am sore, battered and bruised, even today. Still can't get over how different the bike is from my recent Felt aluminum bike....I was skeptical about how much difference steel was than aluminum as it relates to feel but it is definitely noticeable.
