Bought a Momsen STR 29 steel frame ( STR29 - SINGLE SPEED - MOMSEN ? The SA Bike Company ) earlier this year. Idea was to build it up as a rigid single speed. Got going on the idea of a custom spray job to get exactly what I want. Inspiration came in many shapes and colors:
Have always been a fan of racing colors. Especially Gulf Oil and Martini. The Production Privee Shan kept me awake, dreaming many a night
In my search I stumbled upon a Martini Racing Specialized Shiz and got a lot of inspiration from the effort and attention to detail that went into it. The guy had custom decals made and went through a lot effort to get the exact look he was looking for.
Full details can be viewed here: The MARTINI SHIV is finally done.......: Triathlon Forum: Slowtwitch Forums
But the tubing on the steel frame was too small to make the Martini colors work so I decided to go with Gulf. Found a local spray painter who is also an avid cyclist and a member of our local forum thehubsa.co.za - Cycling forums and bicycle classifieds
Gave me some great advise and after a couple of chats took off with my frame to get going.
Plascon Removall was applied as a stripper once all the bits from the frame that will not be worked on, like the headset cups, seatpost clamp and dropout sliders.
Frame stripped down to the bare metal:
Epoxy primer applied
First coats of color
All that's still needed is some clear coat
