    Litespeed UNICOI 29er Softtail!

First time seen at the EHBE (European Handmade Bicycle Exhibition) 2009.

Does someone know when this frame will be available?
I like the low tech suspension paired with the big wheels.

Doesn't show on the current website, so maybe a new 2010 model? (At least in 29"er wheels) The Unicoi was introduced in 1998. (26 inch wheels)

Looks like a titanium Dos Niner. It might be a problem in that regard from Salsa's standpoint, I don't know.

To me the actual rear "shock" assembly looks like it was taken right out of Moots parts bin.

DIdn't that used to have an external shock, like that super crappy Dean? Also, didn't they ALL fall apart? Granted, my memory on this is not to be trusted at all.

Yeah, because Salsa was the first to ever build a soft tail mountain bike.

There are several 29" softails on the market. All sorts of materials too... Moots, Salsa, Siren, Curtlo, Blacksheep/Darryl Funk, Castellano...I'm sure I'm forgetting a few. Softails are great!

    Also... GT, please explain yourself.

    Might be the same protoype?
But they changed the model name to SEWEE instead of UNICOI.

I have meant the Ritchey Softtail 1997 was the first ever?

I had a '99 Unicoi 26" soft tail and it's rear boinger was just like that one - not a shock, but an enclosed elastomer dealio.

Yea, that other thread is the one I posted. Its a prototype, there isnt a set name for it but I dont think they will keep the Unicoi name on this one.

    Definetely looks like a Spalding...

All of this chatter about the rear looking identical to a Moots YBB, which is a TM but not patented. So here is my review from the other thread:

Interestingly, I did a search just yesterday to see if the YBB was patented or simply a trademark. From searching the http://www.uspto.gov/ I can find no patent for either Moots or Kent Eriksen. It appears to be just a trademark, although, there are several patents for variants of soft tails or pivot-less suspension designs.

For instance, how about this soft tail circa de 1897:

Oh, they did patent that in 1896:

I wonder how long patents lasted for back then? I should note that the photos are from Mendoncyclesmith's collection of vintage bikes.

Maybe GT is referring to the dropped TT/seat tube brace?

Agreed, to me it looks more like a Litespeed Moots than a titanium Don Niner.

Don't know why softtails are not more popular. I got a new (2001) unicoi frame in 2006. Great bike. If I only had one bike, that may be it.
