    Kona King Kahuna Build Thread

    This is my first 29er.

Its a new Scandium Kona King Kahuna Frame. I got a great deal on it locally. My original plan was to go 29er SS, but this came up.

Any hoooo .... lots of parts on the way.

Should be a fun build. I have a budget of around $1500 for the thing in real dollars. I am a bit of a flipper of parts to get my funny $$$ to play with so I am hoping it costs me about $500-700 out of my actual bank account

Fork is here ... waiting on the headset. I will have my LBS handle that install and I will do the rest.

Some progress in my dungeon here. Lousy place to take pics.

Had my LBS fit the headset (FSA), stem (answer xc), and fork (manitou tower pro). The seatpost is also FSA. Handlebar is an answer pro taper. Grips are Easton. Tough to get a white seatpost. The saddle is a WTB Rocket V Ti. I picked up a Easton EA70 XC front wheel in close out. I'll have to track down a rear.

Crank and Brakeset should be here next week.

Still deciding on the drivetrain. Either SS or 1x10.

I had plans of going XT for the drive train. Found this for $40. It's a new x9 10 speed rear. I think it's a 2013 or 2014. Not really keen on the colour, but it's cheap! How will it compare to a 770 or 780 series XT derailleur?? I have never had a sram derailleur.

    Listen!

Crank in. Gonna go pick up a titanium m15 for it. NOS Race face Deus xc. Would have preferred a white one, but it will do. $60 is pretty nice price to

    Brakes next.

I ordered a set of Avid elixir 7 trail disc brakes for the thing. Hope it works out.

Tires arrived. I think I am the most excited about these. Skinwall ardents. I'm in my late 30s, and these tires bring me back to the good ol days

damn it i'm kicking myself for not ordering these when i had the chance, went with the regular ardents instead because i was worried they wouldn't air up tubeless. please let me know if you're going to run them tubeless, and if they air up ok.

Well something's missing ... Bet you figure out what???

Well a few things. Crank bolt on way. Already have pedals. The quest for a white ea70xc rear continues. If my latest lead fails I will probably get a set of DT Swiss m520/350s and call it a day. The white wheels really set it off though.

The lbs will take care of the lines.

It's sizing a little big stand over wise, but feels very comfortable in riding position.

Gorgeous bike. Always trips me up to see a manitou with the arch on the inside though.

It's the first fork I have had with the reverse arch ... I sorta like the different look. I haven't owned a manitou in about 18 years! The price point on it is incredible ($250us) and the reviews are good. Looking forward to some warmer and drier weather in Toronto so I can see how it handles the trail.

It came in a bit over budget at about $1650cdn or $1500us.

Looks great love that fork. Seems a lot of love for the latest round of Kona frames.

I had it out today. Muddy has heck in the Don, but I got in a good 2.5 hour ride on the thing.

So far so good. This is my first 29er and they do make you feel a bit like superman. I have been riding a bare bones Ti 26er rigid bike for the past two seasons. The Ti 26er is great, but you had to ride every line just right to be quick and not beat yourself up too badly. The Kona just eats every hit up, and is so forgiving. Lots of sections I used to fine tricky were a joke on this thing ... and the conditions were lousy. One bail when I got cocky :)

Manitou Tower Pro - Really pleased so far. I just followed the factory setup options and played with the damper a wee bit. Very smooth fork, no bottoming, and really nice on the hard hits. Not a bit of soreness in the back!

    Still going strong?

I've come across this frame in a used (in good shape) size small for sale that I am thinking of getting and building up for my wife and/or daughter. What actual year is it? I can't find the specs in the Kona archive website. Was it only sold as a frame and not a complete bike? I would like to make it a 1x11 with a carbon fork. I think it would be a light rocket with a good set of wheels. Are you still pleased with it? Any suggestions?
