    Gearing set up for 2x10

    Guys/Gals
I have a Giant Anthem X 29er and I am approaching 50yr old and not in as good of shape as I had been. Some of my local rides are getting harder with my current gearing and I was looking for any suggestions.
I am looking for a little lower gearing for steeper climbs (especially the one back to my car on my favorite ride). I currently am running the stock configuration my bike came with (2x 10)
39/26 and 36-12. Should I go with a granny gear in the rear or go with a new set up in the front? Any tips?

If you switch to a front triple say SLX, and switch the lever on your shifter from 2 to 3. 42-32-22 should give you good range.

I agree with the above. I'm 55, fat, and slow.... but otherwise pretty awesome ;-) I have my FS 26" bike set up with 3x9 still and use my 34/22 reasonably often. My boys tell me that I can push the bike up the hill at that pace, but I don't WANT to push... I want to pedal!

I recently built up an older 29er HT and opted for 3x10 with a 36/22 granny. Unlike the younger riders of today, I am perfectly capable of operating a front derailleur.

The 1X systems are now getting the range that I would need, but at first when bikes were shipping with 42/30 as the lowest gear, that was not even a remote possibility for me. I would have been pushing somewhere on virtually every ride here in CO.

Can you fit 32/22 rings on your current crank? If not, I would go with a 3x and ditch the big ring in favor of a bash guard, for a 32/22 front. Many/most racers (even cat1s) are happy with a 32 big ring on a 29er, - you should still be able to spin well above 20mph with a 32x11 (or 12).
carry clippers! cut something off the trail every time you ride.

I have the same bike and recently changed the small front ring from 26 to 24. Nothing else needed to change. Sounds like a very minor change but it had a major impact on climbing. Seems to be more in the "sweet spot" power-wise now.

I would change the front chainrings to a 22/36, that will make more difference than changing to a 42t rear cog with less expense and hassle. Going to 3x seems like an unnecessary complication and expense to me.
