Cannondale trail5 fork question? Need to upgrade a lot of stuff

Just got one of these for cheap from REI scratch and dent sale, anyway, the fork sucks and may be blown already (it clunks a lot). I want to get a different fork but I'm not sure what the deal is with the headset / head tube. I think it's just a straight 1 1/8 job but a friend of mine looked at it and thought it was tapered. Can anyone clear this up? I'm a roadie so be gentle hahaha. I would like to get a rigid carbon fork but I need to know what I can use first.

I took it apart and I'm fairly certain the bottom part of the fork isn't 1 1/2, does anyone know what headsets might be compatible with this frame so that I could use a tapered fork? It looks like there's lots of room inside the head tube, is this a standard size?

The steerer is 1.5, you can get a headset from a Cannondale shop for $25 to use a tapered fork.
