I ran an Ardent for about 3 weeks until I tore through a couple of them. I've come to the conclusion that (for me) Maxxis tires don't hold out too well in AZ.
    Can you hear me now?

While I am not in Arizona, I'm in Socal which has it share of dry terrrain. I would take a strong look at the Panaracer Rampage. Its not too slow, not too heavy, it stands up to rocky terrain really well, and the tread lasts a good while.
The key word you mentioned is "aggressive", and the Rampage can hold a line in the dry/kitty litter like no ones business. And its an excellent braking tire.
I would stay away from the Karma and Racing Ralph, not tires I would want to get "aggressive" on. If you want something faster rolling, a bit cushier, but a bit more skitish, the Weirwolf has a lot to offer.
With tires its all about trade-offs. Just my two cents.

I have also torn one Ardent, but they're the best 29er tire in AZ conditions that I've used. And they seal up tubeless easily. The Rampage would be my second choice.

Karma with Stans. Light and not too bad with the cactus.

    i have used

the rampages, did not like them, i have the weirwolf 2.55 on my FS 29r and they are good, but i wanted something different. have tried the hutchinson python (got them for free) rolled super fast but not fat enough for my taste, the new hutchinson toro looks great, but they are hard to find/get and pricey too.
i think i will take the advice and try the Ardent. THANKS!

Run the Ardent up front and Python out back. I've been on that combo for 7 months and will be for the foreseeable future.
