    29er SS

What is the go to SS 29er these days?
Just cracked teh Blacksheep for the 2nd time and looking to replace it with something solid and inexpensive.
Something solid enough to slam through roots and ruts but light enough to still get up hills and knock out 30 - 50km days on.
I am nearly 50 now and so am thinking something with front suspension.

    Probably prefer steel.

Kona Honzo steel frame and build it up yourself? They have sliding dropouts so are popular SS trailbikes. If you don't fancy the weight of a steel frame there's a titanium aswell. Can be run with 120 to 140mm fork.

Alternatively there's the Kona Unit which is a tad more XC-ish, but is still steel and has sliding dropouts for ss.

I'd start here steel SS 29er frames, 2016-17 edition

You could also have your thread moved to the SS forum

I like the Unit but it's only available as B+. The Surly Karate Monkey is still alive but they made some major changes to geo this year. Soma Juice is a good frame, but has long chainstays if that matters to you.

I'd check out Vassago Jabber or Verhauen. both nice frames, good geo, good build quality, but no XL if your tall.

    "Fully rigid" isn't a thing.

    Vassagocycles.com

I had a Optimus ti. and loved it.

    I now have a 2017 Vassago Mooseknuckle. Which I can run 29er or 29+

Bike weighs 22lbs with a Reba 120mm fork on it.

I have had a steel Salsa SS. was a great bike just heavy.
After going Vassago. I'll only ruin Ti and a Vassago frame for my SS needs

If you are interested in a Kona Unit that is not B+, give Bikeman.com a call. They still show earlier 29er models available. When I called earlier this year, the gentleman I talked to actually found a size I wanted that did not show up on their website.

I bought a 2016 and love the bike, but if I had to do it again, I would try to get a 2015. That purple frame looks great.

If I were going to buy a steel SS (again) it'd be a Soma Juice.
I'm currently on a CHUMBA Stella Ti and love it.

My main bike is 2010 Kona Unit and I love it. Has been my daily commuter and trail bike for 6 years and never had an issue.

If I get another steel 29er it will be a Soma Juice.
