    29er Air Forks

Hi guys! This is my first post on this forum but I've come here before on occasion to look at some threads. I recently found out that my forks on my 2012 Trek Mamba were defective from day 1, I had always thought that something was off and that the forks were way too stiff but I asked my LBS where I got it and they assured me it was normal. I since have moved and I talked to a couple LBS and they have all told me it is far from normal for my forks to be so stiff.
That being the case the one bike shop has offered to look into the cause of the fork's problems free of charge. I have yet to decide whether I am going to just put money into fixing them or buy a new set like I have been wanting to.
So here's my question guys! If I were looking at a new set of air forks for my 29er (It's a G2 bike but I'm willing to fit it with non-G2) what would you guys suggest?
P.S. I'm hoping to keep the price under 500, I know it limits my options but I'm a student at the moment!

I'm sure you can find a new reba for under $500 and a used one for half that.

I'm a little concerned about buying a used fork however this seems to be a good price, I'm wondering what do you guys think of it? Is it necessary to see the fork in person or not and what do I need to know if I look for a used fork.

There was a recall on Trek forks that includes some 2012 models. Safety and Recalls - Trek Bicycle

Probably wont help you get a better fork, maybe you can talk them into credit toward a new one. Suntour has an upgrade program search on the site, and there are some good deals on Suntor Raidon and Epicon forks on ebay. Will get you out for less than $250 before install.

Thanks TwiceHorn but my fork is a RockShox XC32 TK 29er Coil version that came with the bike, don't believe the recall applies to it

That explains it, its an entry level crap fork. I believe a X-fusion Slide 29 is also another cheaper alternative at around $300 new.

Thanks for pointing me towards nashbar! I found the TS6 on the Canadian website, how much of a difference will I notice swapping to a 120mm fork that isn't G2 offset and how expensive would it be to swap into a through axle setup?

+1. I've had float, talas, and Reba forks before, and I'd pick the tower pro over all of them. Too bad manitou folded it back into the minute line. Seems like prices were better under the tower logo. They can still be found on eBay and the classifieds.

SR Suntour has some great values, and they have a US office that tunes them for your needs.

IIRC, the Mamba is not a high end bike so you may want to limit how much money you put into it unless you're in a strategy where that purchase will go to a future frame or bike.

The suntour raidon is pretty good for $250, and I'm sure the epicon is even better.

I think I've decided on these rockshox, they seem to be well priced and I've seen good reviews. I wish I could have found the Manitou Tower Pro however anything I found was going to cost me a lot in shipping. (I'm from Canada)

Anyways, do you guys think this is a worthy purchase?
