    29er or Adventure Hybrid

Looking to get a new bike since I'm too old to feel good on my roadie. I'm looking for mostly commute to work but want something that I can have some off-road fun with on occassional weekends. The big question regarding trails is at what point is an adventure hybrid a bad idea with respect to trail rides? I live in the Houston area and don't see myself tackling any serious mountain trails, but there are some local areas(anyone been to the Ho Chi Mihn trail?) and day trips that have some serious tree roots, bayou-side hills, and are a bit more rugged than gravel trails.

The fork is what matters in "mountain" bikes. Suntour fork means bike paths and no roots and rocks. Hybrids no chance.
The least expensive route is to take advantage of the Suntour upgrade Raidon air fork for $175. Put that on a 450 bike like the Costco Northrock 29 or a BikeDirect Gravity Point1 for $450 shipped.
The thread with reviews on the Suntour upgrade is in the Beginners section. You need the receipt for the original bike purchase so keep that in mind if you shop used.

Would it make if a difference if my off-road riding would be a casual relax-and-enjoy-the-view pace as opposed to seriously riding the trails?
