29 hardtail top choice?
What hardtail would you go for with $5000 usd or there about? Looking for a ht 29er for Xc and singletrack. Any ideas?
Looking for something light to throw about and have fun whilst doing a few longer (max 50-100k) rides occasionally, but I don't expect to be winning races!
Any help great fully received....
Custom Steel. IF would be my choice.
For me it would be a Cannondale FS-i Carbon Team.
FYI, I ride a Jamis Dragon Race. My next bike will probably be a FS-i. With the way the seat stays and chain stays are designed (hourglass shape) combined with with the Save seat post, there is approx 23-25 mm of compliance in the rear.
+1 on custom steel... Or if you want off the shelf..

The titanium one.
Trek 2014 Superfly 9.8 with a wide hookless carbon or Wide Lightning wheelset. XR1 2.2 tires. 2015 9.7.
22lbs. with major compliance. Excellent new geo. Quick steering and stable. An improvement over the 9.9SL.
Orbea Alma M20 with a wide wheelset.
ALMA M20 ? Orbea
Pivot Les buildup with a wide wheelset.
The wide rims add cushion with more volume and 4-5 psi less pressure. Climbing and cornering traction are increased. More sidewall support cuts washouts. For some terrain you can run Schwalbe Thunder Burts.
I have Wide Lightnings on my 9.8 and when added to the engineered frame compliance they take away trail feel and make the rear feel like the 100mm SID front. I may not need that much so I'm lacing a wide carbon rim from carbonbicycle.cc to see how a little extra stiffness affects things
