    2013 Cannondale Scalpel 29er Carbon 1 changes

I was able to get some info yesterday as Cannondale released the 2013 lineup info to their dealers. I'm interested in this years Scalpel 29er Carbon 1, they have changed the paint scheme to the World Cup colors. Other notable spec changes are 1) Wheelset changed to Reynolds Carbon 29er , 2) Crank changed to Sram X.O , 3) Rear shock changed to Sram XX with X-Loc remote Lockout (not pictured), 4) New Lefty (not Pictured). What do you guys think about the 2013 version ??? They didn't make any changes to the other Scalpel 29er's, the Ultimate, Carbon 2, Alloy 3, & Alloy 4 all stay the same except they will be getting the new Lefty, paint schemes and specs remain the same as 2012 models.

I rode a alloy 4 this weekend and it's a smooooooth bike. The new lefty is going to be very good.

Scapel is a very nice lineup for sure.

Holy hell that thing is fugly. The NASCAR comment is spot-on. Hopefully it rides better than it looks.

Whatt is the price? I think that bike competes well against the Epic S-Works. Holy cow .... If this is the dash-1.... What is the spec on the Ultimate? I like the graphics, but then again I'm a triathlete. (Please dont let that get out).

Red, black and blue....Ugh! I prefer the 2012 simple (matte) B/W scheme of the carbon 1 or even the B/W and green on the Carbon 2. Wtf, no more Sl crank??

    This.

They've taken this color scheme onto one of the supersix road bikes and it actually looks awesome, but this is tragic. The wheelset change... meh. The shock change... meh. The crank change... lame.

Only positive to me is the new lefty - while I resent the use of a bushing in a lefty, I think the hybrid setup and no more boot / greasing will potentially be awesome as a mechanic and user for simplified maintenance. Anxious to ride one to see how the bushing does.

Well, what ever this thing looks like, I can tell you this, it rides AMAZING! I rode a 2012 29er Carbon 1 extensively over some pretty technical stuff (Preston trail @ Tiger Mt.WA) and the bike performed flawlessly. Ridiculously fast, nimble, great climber, precise and the new LEFTY will only make things better.

I really wish they had stuck w/the matte finish and simple color scheme though. Or even something similar to the new Trigger graphics. Let's wait and see what the actual bikes that the dealers look like though.

IMO, it's the best FS 29er on the market.....if you can afford one, buy one!!

The NASCAR stuff is over done by the third post.

Got to ride the bike today at a Cannondale demo at Ben Hawes. Fast, fun, flowy trails with a couple smallish rock gardens thrown in.

The paint actually looks cool in person. Not a single person didn't like it.

The bike is insane. The new lefty is so smooth its scary. You literally point and go with it. It took me a couple minutes to get used to how quick the bike reacts to your command. It's also insanely light and stuff. The only issue I had was the rear shock took forever to dial in and that gave some pedal bob if you stood up.

This bike is an insane steal at the price IMHO. I knew it would be a fun ride but it surpassed what I expected.

In fact I'm probably pulling the trigger on a '13 Alloy 3 tomorrow depending on the price quote I get for the other bike I'm looking at.

Picture to come when I get home.

do you have more photos? what shifters and brakes have? they change the rear shock fox rp 23 for a rock shock? that comes in 2012 with the carbon 2?

This was a Carbon 1. I dont have anymore pics. It was a spec bike for 2013. It has XO brakes, shifters, derailers and crankset.

I believe the shock was a Monarch RT3. Im not too sure honestly as I think the XL and L had different shocks than the M and S.

The new Trigger was there as well. I wish they would of had one in my size as that looked like a very fun bike!

    2013 Cannondale Scalpel 29er Carbon 1 changes

Those who got the 2012 29er 1 got a steal. The new carbon 1 isnt as nicely spec'd - dropped the XX to X0 across the board shifters, rear-D, front D stays X0, and crank goes X0 - you opted for the new wheels on the 2013 and the new model lefty.

The Ultimate gets the XX/XTR drive train ( I know because I just ordered one after seeing the drop in specs and fugly paint scheme).

Will the performance be different with the X0 vs the XX/XTR - for serious racer types you may notice difference for the normal trail rat - I highly doubt you'll see a noticeable difference.

It is what it is...and its not what its not.

Does a Scalpel not have a chainstay pivot at the bottom bracket? I looks that way to me, anyways. I guess the design relies on the carbon fiber to flex? Anyone know abou this? Thanks.

The 29ers have a BB pivot, although 26ers did not. It does not have a seat/chainstay pivot however.

Also, I am still very happy about getting the 2012.

Anxious to try out the new triggers in 29 - but there aren't even real photos for dealers yet, so who knows when that'll exist...

First of all hi to everybody.

I checked the dealerbook as well and IMHO there is only one color scheme. The "exposed carbon magnesium white" is just part of the red/white/blue color description.

Ordering a 2012 version is not really an option for me as I like the new Lefty better the old version. Much less of a fuzz to keep it working. Going back to X0 hurts a little but I am unable to detect significant differences in performance. Also I prefer the new wheels.

Probably going to order it this week.

I spoke to the rep who said Cannondale would be offering 2 color choices. It (very) clearly states which ones in the dealer book: "exposed carbon w/magnesium white AND ultra blue gloss".

    2013 dealer book here

I agree about the LEFTY though. The new fork is going to be a "game change" and from what I hear, worth the wait/cost of getting a 2013 model.

However time moves on and that was my last 26" bike therefore when i was in the market for a new XC race bike nothing could touch the S Works epic 29er and that still rings true today.

cannondale still makes a great product but specialized currently makes a better one.

You have to ride one...with in five minutes of a demo ride I was sold.

Then entire package from the brain technology that lets you hammer with out the fork or rear suspension bogging down and then when things get rough the suspension lets the bike track the terrain not bounce all over it.

the geometry is spot on this doesn't ride like your fathers 29er it's extremely nimble and fast riding bike. the whole bike is well thought out and possibly the only one i have ever purchased and didn't feel the need to upgrade anything.

I'm not a bike tester or reviewer all i can say is ride one and then ride anything else and you'll be running back to the specialized epic. Cannondale, Scott, Giant, Santa Cruz, Pivot all make a good XC 29er but the S Works epic is just that much better.

I might be too stupid to get your point but:

    Scalpel 1
"exposed carbon w/magnesium white and ultra blue, gloss (blk)"

    Scalpel 2
"exposed carbon w/magnesium white and berseker green accents, gloss (grn)"

Eventhough there is an "and" in the description, there is only one color reference (blk). Therefore the reference with the dealer book is not valid. If there is a second color scheme, it will be added later.

So now that the Cannondale website has been updated, can anyone confirm the components on the Ultimate? The dealer books all sale XTR shifters and rear derailleur. The web site says XX throughout. Also, what's the deal with the web site list price for the Ultimate of $11,000? My local dealer still thinks it's $10,000. Is my dealer just eating some of the profit or is 10k the real list price?

Brought my Ultimate home on Friday - it is XX front D, XTR rear D and shifters. Sticker price on my ride was 10999.00 - basically 11K. My price was well...you dont need to know.

Scalpel 29er 1 Alt Colorway (from Infinite Cycles). Check my Scalpel album.

Red, white and blue on the frame replaced with tri-tone grey/black. More like the understated '12 paint job.

brought my ultimate home this past saturday. what a sweet ride! for me 5' 10'' and 215 lbs everything just feels right on. it's fast and just plain fun to ride. all i changed out was the saddle(Sella SMP -have a glider and extra-great saddles). i also commute to work and only compromise is rear rack for my bag; am trying topeak seatpost mounted rack. just got it so no opinion yet.

Mine will be here tomorrow. Just need to swap to xtr....

Nice to know the Reynolds assurance program is included as well. I though the blue scheme was ugly at first but after seeing it in person, it's pretty flashy. Still not my style hence my choosing the badass understated gray.

Got it put together yesterday. 23.3 lbs out of the box. With tubes and no pedals. Very sharp looking. Just need the snow to melt now.

Old post I know, but I was able to ride this bike yesterday during a Cannondale demo ride. This thing was fast! I can only afford the aluminum version, but I'd hope it's close in ride!

Yes...you'll be even more glad when it comes in! It looks even better in person. Way way better than my photo. I've seen them both in person and the BBQ is a nice combo between stealthy and flashy. Just the right amount of each. I swapped over the XTR so it lost a little pizzazz from the red on the X0 components, but it more than makes up for it in coolness!

Also, The frame shape pretty cool. Only thing I've noticed that's a bit strange (and it's purely perception) is how when looking down, the top tube is SO wider than the front tire. Makes the 2.1" tires look skinny. When is yours supposed to come in?

So sweet ! I had a moment where I was considering the blue/red. Glad I went this route. It will be interesting if my fiance notices it hanging in my garage, my current mtb is black, another reason I went with the bbq. The white/blue/red would most definitely cost me a day shopping for purses or some sh-t They just dont understand hahaha ! I should see the bike early next week. Cant wait to put some miles underneath her. Thanks for the feedback !

Classic! WildBill sounds like you and should be roommates. If my wife divorces me and your gfriend does the same for buying bikes that we hang in the garage in hopes they don't notice, then it might just happen. Not to mention we both have handles with Wild ***.

    ride on.

    Hey,

Keen to know your riding impressions... Just curious, but did you consider any other options? I've gone all gooey over the BMC FS01 29er, but am secretly having an affair of the mind with the Scalpel.

Love to know how you're finding your Ultimate.

    Cheers!

    best ride ever

I've ridden the 2013 scalpel and IMO it is the best bike I have ridden, the only complaint I have is the brakes suck I would rather have XTs like on the new trigger 29er (another awesome bike). Oh and the colors are a bit annoying but who cares when your flying by everyone on the trail.

What is the rear shock measurements for the Scalpel? Is the rear shock the same size for the Scalpel 1 and the allow Scalpel 4?

I would assume so if the frames are the same measurements. You should be able to find that out online or with a simple email to cannondale. They are pretty good about responding in a timely manner.
