    27.5 hardtail for son

I want to get a hardtail 27.5 or 650b depending where you are from for my son. I am open to out of the box complete or building up a Chinese carbon frame. Does anyone have any advice/insight?

How old's your son? What style riding? Pure xc? AM? Dirt jumping?

Built up a HT frame for my 12 y/o who's been mtb riding since 4.

I chose a Ragley aluminum frame. Built it up with spare parts I had including a Pike fork.

I could have gone lighter with a Chinese carbon but the geo on many of those frames are much more xc. Not only is his style more AM but he likes dirt jumping the bike as well with friends. The bike also takes a bit of a beating - as it should from a 12 y/o.

Further more, that particular frame looked pretty darn cool. It was the mmmbop model, silver and black, from a few years ago. Think I paid less than $250 shipped for the frame. Built up real easy.

100/142 spaced wheels and forks can be had real cheap these days.

    Miker,

Thanks for the question. He will be racing XC. He is 9 and has gotten hooked on cyclocross this fall and wants to continue racing next summer on a MTB. Thanks

Yeah, then building up a light Chinese carbon frame is what I'd look into. To get an idea of lightweight builds that work well for kids check out Trailcraft brand bikes. Out of Colorado.

Ritchey p650b can be had for around $500 shipped right now. There are a lot of new frames on eBay.
