    Shamrock Cycles- 650b hardtail

    So here are a few pics of a frame, fork, and stem I am building for NAHBS. A fillet brazed 650b hardtail and suspension adjusted fork. Columbus 38/32/32mm dia. tubing on the front triangle, 4130 straightwall 16mm .028" seatstays that I added a double bend to, and massive Mad Max 13.5* bend chainstays. Paragon Machine Works sliding drop-outs, and a super secret Chris King headtube and headset. King is getting ready to start offering a new headset called the Inset. It is a semi-integrated headset that requires a special headtube.

    69.5* headtube, 72* seattube, 35mm bottom bracket drop, 420mm chainstays (with dropouts all the way forward). Fork is fillet brazed 4130 steel tubing with 475mm axle to crown length and 45 mm rake (trail measurement of ~84mm). Stem is fillet brazed 4130 with 5* positive rise.

    The whole set was packed into a box and is making its way out to Spectrum Powderworks in Colorado Springs, CO. Come on out to NAHBS February 27-March 1 to see the final product.

    gorgeous bike, on a side note, why can't king just build something to existing industry standards, how many integrated/semi-integrated headsets do we need? This is the reason their stupid Perdido didn't work, and even with that one you could mod a zerostack head tube. This one requires a proprietary headtube? not a good idea imho

    Did anyone else read the King rant on integrated headsets and why they will never be making one?

    I think you need to reread the King website. 99% of his rant is against "integrated" headsets where the bearings are pressed directly into the frame. The only bad thing he could come up with for "internal" headsets is that no one makes headtubes to the same quality standards as his headsets (i don't know why this doesn't apply to normal headsets?). From that perspective it makes sense that they would sell the new headset with a headtube as well.

    Anyway, it sounds like a new design than the current internal headsets also

    Looks very interesting. My initial reaction is to the geometry, which seems to be on the way "s t a b l e" side. Is that geo a request by a customer for this rig? It seems odd to me, but anyway.........

    The "semi-integrated" thing: That would indicate to me that there will be an outer cap on the top for sure and possibly on the bottom where King will be able to still get some ano in there.

    At any rate, it looks really good, (the frame) and I hope to see it at the show myself.

    Yeah, we talked about the geometry and how he wanted the bike to ride. Certainly he wanted a bike built for speed and momentum riding as he was coming from a Cove Handjob. Low to mid 80's in a trail measurement, while on the longer end, isn't unheard of.

    A little backround on the build does wonders.

    Low 80's isn't unheard of, no. But.....I don't think it plays to the strengths of 650B wheels. That's why it struck me as being odd. However; since it is a customer specified geometry, I understand why it is what it is.

    Now the only question that remains is why have it be suspension corrected with that much axle to crown unless........ ssshh! More secrets, eh?

    Excellent question! Gold star for Ted. Come to the front of the class and receive your major award.

    The way it worked out is that the future owner of this bike has a Pike 130mm fork that he may use on this bike on a pretty regular basis. The A-C of the Pike is 508mm and with 25% sag of 130mm travel the effective A-C is 475mm.

    the fork design looks interesting. any special reasons for this style as opposed to a "standard" segmented crown fork?

    this bike is sweet, im envious!

    The spirit of Eric Estrada (I don't make any major decisions without consulting the spirit of Eric Estrada) visited me in a dream and told me to build it this way. He also told me to grow a porn 'stache, get a denim jacket, and try and get on a reality TV show.

    In all seriousness, I wanted to get a bit of the fork rake out of the crown and a bit of rake out of the legs, rather than all of it our of the fork crown. (i.e. of the 45mm of fork rake 30mm came from rotating the fork crown forward and about 15mm came from canting the legs forward). It just seemed a bit more natural to build the fork in this style to accomplish this.

    Wow, that turned out nice. There's an amazing about of detail/work in that frame as well as the paint..

    Question - What happened with the front brake routing.

    What's the wheelbase on that bike? It looks like it would be great for technical riding- looks like it would be easy to get that front end up and on or or over trail obstacles that's for sure.

    The front fork is a sore subject for me. I forgot to braze a cable guide onto it and didn't realize it until the bike was already off to the powdercoaters. Talk about a "sonofabit*h!!" moment. Plus the hose is a whisper too long so after trimming it will just follw straight down the back leg.

    The wheelbase is 1050mm with the wheel full forward in the drops.

    41.3" that's pretty short eh?

    Was it customer preference to have the paragon sliders? Just wondering as to the reason for going with paragons over a more traditional vertical dropout design.

    Yes, the customer wanted Paragon dropouts and I didn't protest much because I like using them. So I was more than happy to accomodate that request.

    Relatively short wheelbase (I think it is actually 41.6mm but I rounded it off to 1050 in my previous post). Plus, he can extend the CS from 420 out to about 435 or so with the Paragons if he really wanted to.

    The optimal question is can my body handle 12 hours of PMBAR on a hardtail? Oh I'm sure for you fully rigid fixed boys it's nothing but for me . . . well, I'd like to think so but I will be bringing the 5" travel bike with me just in case.

    Four teams heading down from Indy for PMBAR once again. Bringin' the Buggy of Doom!
