Just finished racing the 24 hours of Rocky Hill ranch ( Vet masters class )
As a previous 27.5 detractor I have been spending the last month or so testing and playing on both my much loved Scott Spark 29er and the 2015 Giant Anthem Adavanced 1 27.5.
Was planning on getting in some test laps at the race course before the race and sadly it never happened. So took both bikes and was planning on trying to ride both during the race. First laps were done on the Scott, the course was very twisty and loose so I found I was having to scrub off speed in the corners, but the bike still handled the course well. My first laps on the anthem happened at night , I really enjoyed the bike, it really carved the turns better than the 29er, I think it seemed to be close to as fast on the straights. all was going great until a sidewall slice on the rear tire turned into a long and frustrating flat repair ( 20 minute worth! Long story I'll spare you the details ) so I shelved the anthem for my 3rd night lap due to concerns over thorns and a rear tubed wheel. First morning daylight lap and last lap were on the anthem, I cannot tell you which bike was faster since the new timing system does not give you specific lap times, just best, worst and average. My overall impression of the Anthem was that it really handled the course better than the Scott, not sure if speed was better but if fun were a factor I would choose the Anthem over the Scott.
3 laps each on both bikes, and first place in masters!
